The first issue for a new team book is always difficult.The first issue of teams are difficult in general.But this strays from the "we're all here and we've beaten the villain, let's make this team up a regular thing" type of story.It really told me that the JLA, while sharing a moniker with their more benevolent counterparts, is not going to be a straightforward "good guy team".The roster is assembled by Amanda Waller who seems to be the DCNU's John Lynch in that she has her hand in everything and you don't know exactly what she's up to.Say what you will about her changes, THAT they've kept the same.In typical Ocean's Eleven fashion we see small snippets of the recruits activities.Hawkman's acting like a badass, Vibe is surprised to be a recruit, Stargirl receives Geoff Johns undivided attention.The writing is slower, less in your face as we're treated to a back and forth between Amanda Waller and Steve Trevor in an office.The biggest mystery that's introduced is Martian Manhunter.Since his debut in Stormwatch #1 we've gotten the impression that he's very active in the DCNU, his appearance in Green Lantern Corp, Legion Lost and Justice League hint to his extant.Only time will reveal what it is that the Manhunter from Mars is really up to and what he'd gain from joining the JLA.
