There have been a lot of reviews and comments detracting from this series on points of a technical or storytelling basis, and they're certainly correct. For example, daccampo has written an excellent one on this very website. I felt compelled to express my reaction on a purely emotional level. To put it very simply, man this was a grim book to read.
I appreciate that this series was set up as the book where the Justice League gets proactive, and lives up to their name. However, Robinson hasn't really even given us that. They're still completely reactive, this time to the schemes of Prometheus. What makes it worse though is that this book just wallows in lowest common denominator superhero grimness. Robinson is a favourite of mine from way back, I was a slave to his every word in the nineties and for a time wrote monthly letters to Starman (3 printed folks!) and I'm still liking his Superman, which I find quite a nice optimistic read. With Cry for Justice though I found myself turning each new page with despair, until finally they killed the child and I almost let myself give up. I did read the rest though, in the vain hope of the one thing that might salvage it. I figured that, in the end, this was the JLA, the DCU's best and brightest, so surely there would be that rousing moment of redemption. That one moment, the kind of last minute save that Morrison (JLA) and Waid (Flash) used to absolutely excel at. Only it never came. In the end we had that final piece of vigilante justice as Green Arrow murders Prometheus, and the misery is complete.
It's not even that I find the ending controversial. Superheroes killing is not unusual, and Green Arrow has always been a little on the edge. It's not too out there for the protaganist of books like Green Arrow Year One or the end of Dark Knight Returns. It's just that the last page "hero snaps and kills" idea is so done to death in every media, that it just seems, well, kind of meh. Was this all we were building to? It just left me depressed.
Luckily, there are plenty of other good books to write about this week. Let me go choose one and cheer myself up.....
