I will admit than when this book started I was not exactly
blown away. The first few issues felt very been there, done that as we watch
yet another twisted analogue of everybody’s favorite Man of Steel run amuck. Sure
it was well written and well drawn but I couldn’t help but long for a continuation
of Waid’s far superior villain driven series Empire in place of this book. Well
five issues in and I find that Irredeemable has managed to turn my opinion
around. Don’t get me wrong. It’s still not as good as Empire was but for good
nasty driven fun (as opposed to say the Boys which is bad nasty driven pointlessness
by way of Ennis retreading himself) you could do a lot worse. I also like the
fact that there are subplots beginning to pop up that point to this book having
more than just “Look Ma its Evil Superman” driving it in the future. I do not
want to spoil the fun so I will just say that I found the last page twist a
nice, if admittedly obvious, one. This book is the poster child for why you
should give a book from a good creative team a few issues to find its footing.
At 99 cents how can this book be anything but:

Recommended.

  1. Ah, if only Waid hadn’t tipped his hand.  Don’t we all know who’s who in the longjohns, now?

  2. iRantboy,

Oh, let me tell you that there are plenty of surprises left.  PLENTY!

  3. I hope so.  I’m a big Waid fan, and will be disappointed if this is all about Lexington in the driver’s seat.
