I’m not a uber Doctor Who fan. I just got into the series when they revamped the show with the 9th Doctor (Christopher Eccleston) and I am enjoying the new seasons with the 10 Doctor as well (David Tennant). Although I have read up on the history of Doctor Who and I know who the past Doctor’s are; I’ve never seen much of the original series. So it might seem stupid to dive into a Doctor Who issue with the 6th and 7th Doctor, but with Grant Morrison on board I was intrigued to pick it up.
Now again, I dont know much about either Doctor’s, so I got confused right off the back with the issues. I dont know why the Tardis is so big and why there is a talking Penguin in the first story. The next story with the 7th Doctor was just as confusing and I didnt understand why he was so depressed. I have a feeling that you need to be a big fan of this series in order to get the references and the minor characters. But overall I enjoyed them for what they are and Morrison did a good job here. Confusing as hell, but still entertaining.
The art is pretty well done too, both by John Ridgway and Bryan Hitch. Both stories have great detail and I hope these two stay with Morrison if he plans on doing more issues of this. Overall I had fun with this, but I would’ve had more fun if I was a bigger fan of the series. I’m sure a ton of you guys love Doctor Who and you’ll get the stories more then I did. But if you take out the history and back stories of these two doctors; you still have a fun sci-fi story written by a great writer. Worth your time, that’s the bottom line.
Art: 4 - Very Good
Confusing as hell eh? More because of Morrison’s trademark confusery? Or more because you don’t know the back story of the Doctors?
@CAM: The latter, as I said in the review I only know about the 9th and 10th Doctor’s. I didnt even know about Doctor Who until 5-6 years ago. So I cant say Morrison was confusing me because I knew I would be confused before I even opened the page. But for a GM comic, it certainly wasnt confusing enough to defend itself cause so many people hate his writing style now a days.
