I’ve really liked the pace and the scope of this story.  To me, this is what an “event” should feel like.  Morrison strikes the right balance of action and story and weaves it together in a very interesting and thoughtful way.  Every issue has been dense and well-crafted.  As the story ends its middle act, we see the dawn just glimmering through the despair as the forces of good look to turn the tide against evil.

As the plots of the Green Lanterns, Libra, and Miracle’s squad of Japanese superheroes reemerge, Darkseid plots to further subjugate the earth to his will.  Their hearts and minds aren’t enough, the Dark God demands everything of them.  Meanwhile, Checkmate and the remnants of Earth’s heroes continue to fight the good against corrupted friends and foes alike.  The ultimate fight of good vs evil spirals on with terrific visuals from J.G. Jones and Pacheco.  The colors and inks keep everything consistent as two wonderful artists show themselves as at the top of their game.  Morrison’s characterizations are great, from a somewhat regretful Lex Luthor (keep in mind alien subjugation of humanity’s will, be it spit-curled or otherwise, was something he wanted to STOP, not help in) to the action hero goodness of the Earth Green Lanterns. If there’s one problem, it’s like Grant Morrison’s signature cosmic dialogue shouldn’t be coming out of Guy Gardner of all people.  Nevertheless, it’s all aces.

Final Crisis makes me happy.  It’s giant in scale yet intricate in story.  It’s fast-paced yet takes the time to make the moments count.  The pacing and composition is terrific, a true example of a great superhero tale.  The art pops and the story sings.  It’s Grant Morrison, J.G. Jones, and Carlos Pacheco doing what they do best… and what they do is kick a$$.

Story: 4 - Very Good
Art: 5 - Excellent

  1. i totally agree it was great and enjoyed every page

  2. I don’t understand why there isn’t one review for all the kick ass Vertigo comics that have been coming out lately but everybody just loves this junk?  I just don’t understand it.  It’s like nobody reads the comic books that are cool and interesting, but there is all of this hype about Final Crisis rubbish.

I really wish I could find a source of information that explains this kind of stuff.  What has Vertigo just never jumped on?  Don’t people ever get tired of reading about Super Heroes and want to check out what’s it like to read a comic from another genre?  I mean look at the movie industry.  You don’t see everybody flocking to just watch super hero movies but every other theater in the building is empty.  How come The Simpsons has been on TV for 20 years and people still love them to death, but nobody likes their comics but me?

The comic book industry just doesn’t make much sense.  Look at how the industry was in the late 1940s to early 1950s.  Comic books from every genre were flying off the racks!  Horror comics were the leaders of the industry, with science fiction at a close second.  People even bought Disney and Archie comics.  Nobody buys horror comics anymore.  I think my brother is the only kid who I’ve ever saw reading an issue of The Walking Dead.  When I go to my local comic shop, I have to order Vertigo books out of PREVIEWS months and months in advance or he won’t even order any.  I’m the only one who buys them.  What is so wrong with them?!?
