I am going to sound like a total hypocrite here, because I have been really turned off by Nyguen with this arc. He add’s lines when there doesnt need to be, his reaction shots are a bit iffy to look at (are they surprised or screaming at Batman? I dont know), and his covers have been down right terrible to me. But I gotta say: This was a good looking issue.

I think Nyguen does great with adding the tone of this book. It’s dark, it’s depressing, and overall it isnt a pleasant place what ever the setting is. He does a good job with the backgrounds too, I still love that machine Selina is hooked up too; where did he get that idea from? But other places like Arkham, or Hush’s basement, or referencing the last Hush series; Nyguen did a great job with everything in this issue. Heck the faces actually looked good as well! Mostly smooth, and no extra lines added like everyone is fifty years old. My only gripe was the beginning pages with Bats, Crane, and Joker…I dont like his take on Dr. Crane and his head is way too love and oval like, plus Joker’s face goes all over the map with the five page.

This was a soild arc and I had fun with this issue. Dini is writing a pretty damn good story here and hopefully Hush comes out as a big time enemy for Batman. It’s actually the darkest thing Dini has wrote on a Batman title I’ve read in a very long time. Sometimes the humor is spread out in little peices like Dini ususally writes Batman, but this is almost as dark as Morrison’s tkae on Batman…Just take out the confusing aspects of Zurr-En-Ahh and you almost got a mirror image of the two titles.

  1. You hypocritical bastard…good spoiler-free review.  Your exceptionally quick review has got me even more excited about reading this when I get home.  (If you want to see another good example of Nyguen’s art, you can check out Superman/Batman #’s 37-42.  His art is very nice in those issues.  You might not want to buy them because the story is a bit weak, but flip through them and I think you will be impressed.)

  2. does anyone else think that the "batman" we see in the main title’s rip story is actually tommy eliot?  i kept thinking that as i read this issue.  it could be an interesting way to tie this all up.  we certainly know that eliot is totally obsessed with bruce wayne so he would know details – and bruce has seemed strange to me since the beginning of rip.
