Daniel Way is certainly going deeper into the mind of Deadpool. Sure that’s a crazy idea, but this series has been crazy for the past fourteen issues. But what is crazy about this inside look at the merc was this: This is the most serious, psychological look for the character since…..well ever I suppose.

Most of this issue has Deadpool talking to himself, but really from the narrative boxes. He’s talking to his other subconscious inĀ  other forms; like Death, or a dead shark, or Cyclops with a snazzy mustache. We get to see a little bit on what makes Deadpool think, in a serious matter. It gets a bit hidden with some clever jokes and bizarre ‘Pool-O-Vision’ dreams, but this is a serious comic. Now obviously that’s not what people who are fans of the guy wants to see. But Daniel Way certainly has shown this idea in earlier issues (notably in issue #11) and he’s just expanding his take on the character. There are a wealth of good jokes in here though. Love the Thanos cameo and the line with Steve Rogers showed his fourth wall pattern.

“Hey you can’t be….Ed killed that guy! Let’s see some I.D. pal!”

Paco Medina is back as artist and as usual, this is a great looking comic. That’s all I can really say. I mean it’s great to see him back but as usual just copy and paste my praise of him from other reviews to this one.

Other then one very groan inducing joke, this was another soild issue. It’s not the best for the run, but this is setting up what could be a very controversial move. If Deadpool does join this team that is on the cover….oh boy a lot of people are not going to be happy. Although I am more worried about Way’s take on the gay community because that was a bit more offensive then this last page reveal. Still, a pretty good comic all around.

  1. I’ve been reading backwards from trade 8-4 of the Cable & Deadpool series and have been impressed by the stories. In the last trade I read, Cable and Deadpool are sitting in a bar evasively discussing a formative event from their past. It was nicely executed and made me realize that Deadpool is a more complicated character than some fans and writers give him credit for.

Have you read this Cable/Deadpool series?

  2. @Scorpion: Yes I have, but it’s been awhile. That’s a series I need to get in trades. Mostly got them from my library, but I want the trades for personal use.

But yes this issue and that series showed a bit more complicated side of the Merc other then just the comedy side.

  3. I’m going to have to disagree, because I want Deadpool to get a bit more serious.  It basically took 14 issues for Way to write something good.  I’m still riding on Deadpools wave, but he needs to lower this zaniness.  You can ride deadpool on 11 all the time. It gets repetitive and bad.  Pretty soon it all become a haze and nothing stands out. This was a great improvement, but i’m still not sold on Way writing him.
