“It’s not supposed to end this way.” begins the final issue of David & Furth’s Dark Tower saga.  And I think they’re right.  What started as a really well put together adaptation of The Dark Tower has slowly fizzled into a barely capable imagining of Stephen’s king events.  All the plot points are hit, but several crucial characters who I’ve been reading about since I was fourteen were killed, and instead of thinking “Holy Shit!”, I thought “Well, that wasn’t written very well.”

I’m not asking for Roland to wail over the deaths of his friends.  On the contrary, his lack of reaction is true to his character.  But his lack of reaction should be bracing and cause the reader to be uncomfortable.  King did that time and time again in his books.  Here, two pivotal characters are killed back to back, and I could barely muster a shrug.

I don’t believe this is entirely the fault of Furth and David.  I think  a lot of the blame goes to to Jae Lee and Richard Isanove.  Every page of this entire series has been a cover.  All poses.  All stark, ominous background.  All shadows.  Stylistically, they’re all logical choices, but they just don’t work.  The shadows make the faces impossible to read, and the overposing makes the story feel forced.

I expected that when David & Furth’s run on The Dark Tower ended that I would wish for more.  But I now wish they had stopped with Treachery, and either handed the project over to a different creative team, or else just ceased it altogether.

It’s not that this issue and these last two series are awful, they’re just far far weaker than the first three arcs.

Comments

  1. I have noticed that its started to languish a bit.  But I’ve still enjoyed the hell out of most of it.  Yet to read the books though:( Just waiting on the shelf for me to start reading actual books again. They may be waiting a while.

  2. @vadamowens: The books are awesome.  Read them.  Now.

  3. Fuck you! You’re so forceful.  God damn Bostonians!!!!!!!! Seriously though, I’ll get on it soon…I promise?

  4. Bostonians?  I’m from Cape Cod.  😉

Seriously, though, now that the series is finished, it’s a satisfying read.  I started when I was a id.  The first two books are complete stories, part 3 ends on a cliffhanger.  It was five years until he released part 4.  Now that I think about it Mark Millar isn’t so bad.

  5. You do write for something Boston related though, right?  I think that’s where I got it from.  Or maybe I’m just a fucktard.

  6. I’m just giving you a hard time.  I’ve lived in or around Boston for the last decade.  As far as I know, you are in no way fucktarded.

  7. *Tear*.  That means so much:p

  8. I second @akamuu’s suggestion that you read the books.  I LOVE The Gunslinger.  It is epic writing.

  9. The Novels are excellent. Battle of Jericho has been a bit of a let down. It felt similar to Long Road Home, which I also didn’t like much.
