I still haven’t decided how on board I am with this title.  The artwork feels inconsistent.  While each panel is definitely current Marvel-influenced art, the pencilling varies from overwhelmingly unnecessary to really sparse and gorgeous.  I’m not familiar with what other titles Brooks has worked on, but I get the feeling that if he weren’t being boxed into the Dark Reign Look, I’d really love his pencils.

I was also back and forth on the story.  It’s often well-told (the “an Avenger” dialogue trick flowed pretty smoothly).  In fact, I can’t find anything specific about it that I didn’t like.  I just didn’t feel locked in.  I think it might have had something to do with the intro page.  While I loved the “Dear Diary” format of the Sinister Spider-Man intro page, the web forum page just didn’t click for me.  Still, while I’ve used the word incosistent to describe it, it’s a good issue.  I’m hoping the next one will blow me away.

Big ups to the creator for the iFanboy shout out, though.  I giggled.

  1. I think Mark Brooks did the first two Ultimate Spider-man Annuals. I liked the 2nd one alot. I think he did some awesome Avengers: Initative covers as well – there was one with Spider-woman-Skull playing chess with the Avengers that look cool

  2. @zeppo: Thanks, I’ll go back and check those out.  And good call on that cover, it put the art in cover art.

  3. I am SO  on board with this.  I was a little wary after the 2nd issue, but this issue really picked it up.  In three issues I’ve come to care more for a character like the Melter then I do any X-character.  Cornell is flying under the radar and I don’t understand why.  Honestly? I think he’s going to be one of the great comic writers in the next few years.

And I hear what you’re saying with Brooks, but I actually think he’s tamed his pencils over the last year.  Far less cartoony (not that there’s anything wrong with cartoony, it’s just not dark reign-y, yknow?) then his work on the USM annuals and his arcs on Ultimate FF. It’s sad; there’s no buzz for this book, and I think it deserves some. It’s lost in the shuffle of all this Dark Reign hoojibawhatsis.
