Goddamn this series for being so great every single month. The past fifteen issues have been nearly comic book perfection since it started. It’s all because of John Layman’s wonderful scripts on one hand. But it’s also because of the gorgeous, downright insane level of detail art by Rob Guillory. If either of these men didn’t do this series (especially Rob Guillory) then we wouldn’t be talking about Chew today.

There is so many jokes packed into each panel here, I really don’t think Rob Guillory is human. I counted at least 10 jokes packed into a single panel within this issue. It’s so hard to really say why Guillory’s work is so amazing. At first glance all you would think that this is just a ‘cartoony’ like comic. But it’s oh so much more if you even look at one panel of this. So much attention to detail, anatomy, and comedic timing is put within each panel that it’s a sight to behold. But when it does get a bit serious (or grim) like with seeing the fate of a new chibicpathic character, then he delivers on that as well. Speaking of which, I really didn’t need to see a 1,000lb naked man fall to the street and his blood goes EVERYWHERE in the street….but Guillory handles it well.

Layman also continues the saga of the FDA and the Chicken flu by…..pretty much ignoring it. I like how this is going, maybe, into a cosmic like area and the Chicken flu that has plagued the world is now being ignored. Seeing characters actually eat chicken on the street is funny, but also surprising and I don’t know what to think of it. But we also get more mysteries with the lights in the sky, Mason’s investigations, and Chu’s sister still being weird. The only thing I wish we could see is more of Chu’s boss being miserable on why John won’t talk to him.

If this does turn into a TV series, I really hope they can translate everything from the comic into the show. Cause, like I’m trying to prove here, if you don’t have the brilliant Layman scripts and the out of this world Guillory art; then there’s no point in this series existing. Their imput into each issue shows and this is yet another great issue in a long line of great issues.

Favorite ‘hidden joke of the month: “NEED CRACK? WE CAN HELP. PLASMA DONATION. 555-CRAK.”

  1. Nice review.  That’s a nice bit of world building if the sight of people eating chicken is shocking.
