This is the worst Captain America comic I have read in a long time.
First off I've felt that the last few issues of Cap have been remembrance issues. If Cap died for a reason apparently it was to be remembered. Let me get on with my review.
This book was mostly made up of new short stories. Towards the end is a Golden Age story involving the Red Skull where he kidnaps Cap and runs around in his costume pretending to be him. I do not plan to cover this in my review as it's a reprint, and although fun, not what upset me about this issue.
The first story is done by Paul Dini and Alex Ross. It is suppose to be Steve's Origin story and is only 2 pages. The art of course is amazing and Paul Dini does a great job of capturing Steve. I enjoyed this, but honestly with only two pages there wasn't a whole lot of room for anyone to screw up a story like this.
The next story was done by Brubaker himself with several artists and it was called One Year After. It follows a bunch of different characters from Sharon Carter to the New Avengers. This arc brought to light that Sharon may have a new clue on Steve being alive. That was all I really got out of this, most of it as character's feelings on remembering Steve. Like I said we haven't done enough of that in the last couple years. As for art duties some of the artists were good on this, most I felt were meh to bad. Such as Chaykin who I can't stand. I though the part in here with the Grand Director wasn't needed. I think most of it was just to bring up the fact that he's still running around. Also the art in the portions titled The Avenger's Dilemma and The Vigilant were terrible. When looking at both, Clint Barton looked so ridiculous I would not have known who he was without the bow or someone calling him his name. Has he had long hair like this in all the other books, have I really not been paying attention? It ended with Sharon as I mentioned earlier revealing that Steve can still be saved. Girl Bucky from the dreaded Liefield Cap should plainly be forgotten.
Next was In Memorium with Roger Stern writing and Kalman Andrasofszky doing art. This story looked back on a couple characters from Steve's past that haven't been brought up in years. Some of this seems to reference some old 80s (possibly older I only have a couple issues from this stuff and I do not for the life of me remember any of it) stories. I liked how it hit on how human Steve was, but overall was a meh story.
Lastly was the The Persistence of Memorabilia written by Mark Waid and art by one of my favs, Dale Eaglesham. The art of course was great in this story. It also was the story I had the most fun with. It's about a man in the Marvel U who holds the largest Cap collection and decides to auction it all off. It's clear that the reason he wants to get rid of it is that he doesn't want all of these reminders of his fallen hero. It also gives a chance for everyone to get back pieces of their memories with Steve. The better part is a gentlemen who comes and buys original pages drawn by Steve himself (they're actually Kirby pages which I thought as awesome) in order to start a new Cap comic where he's a traitor. When he returns to his publisher it's been purchased by the man who sold his collection as not to sully Cap's name. I also enjoyed that Tony Stark repurchased Steve's old Avenger's card.
Overall there was only one story in this book I really enjoyed, most of the others were forgettable. In fact I didn't remember till now that there was a sin and crossbones story along with a Red Skull one (which was pretty good but once again a story about something we already knew about the Skull) With this book having some terrible artwork and being mostly forgettable I wish I had saved my money. There is absolutely no reason this needed to come out on a Monday and any of the relevant information will be repeated next issue or in Reborn.
I also want to go on record now that I'm not all too happy that Steve's coming back only 2 years after his death and only roughly 1 year after Bucky took his place. Don't get me wrong, I love Steve Rogers. Captain America was one of the few comics I tried to follow when I stopped reading for about 4-6 years, but Bucky is just barely starting to cement his presence as Captain America and now it seems possibly in jeopardy. Although when Reborn comes out Brubaker could make me look like an ass and throw us a complete curve ball.

Ouch, harsh.
Looks like I won’t be buying this. I stopped at last month’s pointless #50 remembrance spectacular.
Ya after #50 it’s just more remebering Steve. I wish I saved the $5.
