W-O-W!

Holy Crap!

I am a long time reader, and this book had three really great moments. That’s amazing because I have a hard time usually finding just one in any given book.

This is just fun, spectacular, action packed, comics.

Don’t listen to the nay sayers. They are just part of the “too hip for the room”, pseudo intellectuals, that can’t enjoy a good geek out without lamenting the “inappropriate use of Bruce as the Christ figure” or some other “Oh. Ho Hum. Look they are fighting.”, “hoy palloy” nonsense. You know the type. If they won the lottery, they would complain about the denominations that the millions of dollars came in. If they were kissing the most beautiful woman in the world, they would bitch about what color lipstick she was wearing… well u get the idea.

Once again. Great fun! If this doesn’t scratch your itch, then you should probably stop reading Super Hero books, cuz ur kind of missing the point. Not everything has to be Watchmen, nor should it. Fine wine is great, but sometimes there’s nothing better than an ice cold “beer flavored” beer.

Story: 5 - Excellent
Art: 5 - Excellent

  1. tru dat

  2. I realllllly dislike this criticism that if you don’t like it you’re "too hip." It’s the reverse of the "if you don’t like it, you don’t understand it" argument that is also often leveled. It’s just bullshit. Sorry. I love super-hero comics. This was  very average one, in my estimation.

  3. I weren’t aware there were any nay-sayers about this event. It’s got solid 4’s from me every issue and I’m as critical as it comes (not proud of that, just how I am; it’s "hoi polloi’ by the way–there that proves I’m a real intellectual, not a pseudo-one). This is so much fun, and so well done, it seems like it’s why superhero comics were invented.

  4. This review is awesome! It’s all enthusiasm and nerdness! If a little defensive.

  5. @dacampo – I disagree. To me this was a bunch of fun. I cant understand how some folks say they LOVE Super Hero books, and at the same time, they "poo poo" a book like this, that I think, has everything you would want in an action comic. But once again, this is just my opinion, and like I have said before, "Opinions are like assholes. Everybody has em, and everybody elses stink!" And I am not hatin’ on ya. I respect your opinion and would empty all of my power rings to defend your right to have it.

@flapjaxx – At my LCS, there are a special group of comic snobs, that think every thing published is either, too stupid, or too boring, or they hated the art on panel 3, on page 7, and that why everything in the book sucks. BUT if they hear buzz about a book that may be a ‘little’ critically acclaimed by the beret wearers, and all of a sudden THATS the book that is the greatest thing since the Bible. On the other hand those same peeps are always lamenting on how they miss "good old comics"! WTF? Then I start looking around, and I hear about how "yeah the art was good, but why were there so many splash pages?!?! Boo hoo!" and I dont mean here, I mean other places, where fans are saying how much they enjoyed it, and there are always the same people that come and always post in the negative. It’s Super Hero comics! Not every issue has to be all things to all people. This book promised good art, action, shock, and fun. And as far as I am concerned, it delivered. Corny dialog and all!

Mea culpa on my "hoi polloi"… you snobby bastard! 🙂

  6. @Unoob — I understand that you can’t understand why someone else wouldn’t like it. I don’t mind it when someone champions what they love about a book. My problem is that when the "criticism" is actually against the people who don’t like it, rather than the book. Y’know what I mean? Art ain’t universal. I understand that it’s your opinion presented, but it’s not just your opinion about the story, it’s your opinion of the READERS of said story, too. That’s all I’m sayin’.

For me — I love fun, irrereverant comics. I love action. But action movies or books that really get me going are ones that do something just a little different. An amazing new concept. A dynamic action sequence. Really smart characterization. In my read, Blackest Night has has glimpses of that, but it’s not been sustained in any way. THis issue kinda bored me… I didn’t think the action was all that exciting. The villain stands revealed and he… sends out some more black rings. There was lots of explanation of light and darkness and what it all means here, but the story itself was pretty shallow. I liked the last issue better, as it seemed to really focus on Mera, Atom, and Barry, and that was cool… I could get into those characters. But this issue was sort of a mish-mash of different few points and none were terribly original, and they didn’t add to anything we already learned.  Just my opinion, of course, but I feel like I’ve read a lot of fun action comics that contained stronger stories and deeper characterization. So it didn’t have "everything" for me. I gave it a solid 3. 🙂

  7. @daccampo- But it had Black Lantern Batman!

  8. @daccampo- "Just kidding" 🙂 What had the suspense all ratcheted up for me, was finding out what the Guardians secret is. Or the promise of it. All the other stuff was HOLY CRAP stuff put in to string me along. It was like a roller coaster that has the"big drop" at the end. The BLB and dying heroes were just scary window dressing until that point(which wont show up till next issue btw). I like that. It transports me back to another time ("before the Empire"?). And I am not sure that Nekron is still going to be the final word in this book. I mean Nekron, to me, is like a force of nature. A hurricaine, or a Tornado. Yeah they will mess u up, but if u found out that something or someone could have stopped, or re-directed that force, they would seem much more evil. I think/hope that is what will happen in the final reveal. But then again, it IS OK to agree to disagree.

    -Peace
