Arrrggghhhh!!!! This title is so frustrating!!!!!

Here I am, willing to accept on dropping this series, but no that isn’t going to happen with this issue. Just like issue #2, somehow it all works together to make an enjoyable experience. I’m not happy with that because it brings me to this ultimate question:

Why the hell can’t Ramon Bachs keep this quality going? Seriously, it isn’t the greatest thing ever, but this is such an improvement over the past two issues. Everything about this issue, from the beautiful two page spreads, to just characters talking in an empty bedroom; it all looks great. At least for a guy like Bachs, so faces aren’t a joke to look at and the layouts of each panel are definitely improved. If there is any problems with the art, shockingly it was the coloring and inking. Stanisci’s inks and Smith’s colors have usually been the highlight each issue even with so-so pencils by Bachs. Here though, sometimes the color can be a bit off or the inking just dominates the figures. Sometimes the comic gets too dark and that’s all because of the inking in this. So for once Bachs isn’t the perpretrator of an art crime.

I have always commended Nicieza on the writing for this series and I will continue to do so. He just does a great job mixing in religion, politics, and faith into each issue. Here it’s all about a conflict between Palestines and Isrealis, which is always a touchy subject in any media. With this issue, Nicieza takes a serious look into the matter…..with Azrael and Ragman….okay so it still is a superhero comic but he is able to address real world issues into this. By the time Ragman enters into the fray this is definitely a good, thought provoking issue into the mind of Lane.

So yes I am still a bit angry at Bachs here. I have a very good feeling that next issue won’t be as good as this from him, at least from the track record so far. I wouldn’t mind the guy so much if he just kept this level of quality every issue. He’s like Patrick Gleason but his ratio of good to shaky issues is much lower then Bachs now. Either way I will continue on with this series because Nicieza continues to make it interesting. At least I have that going for me.

Story: 4 - Very Good

  1. Definitely agree that my problem with the art is the inks/colors.  That would explain why I hate Bach’s art in this book so much but didn’t mind it in Red Robin.
