Annihilators #1 was very much a “try-out” book for me. I have loved the last few years of DnA’s cosmic run, but I’m beginning to feel some fatigue. After this issue…. I’m still not sure. The Rocket Raccoon/Groot backup was terrific. From the Office Spacey vibe to Groot’s hilarious punishment on the last page, the backup was full of the humor and irreverence that made Guardians of the Galaxy one of my favorites.

The main Annihilators story however disappointed. The team is not particularly compelling to me, and Quasar’s voice could easily have been Nova’s, to the point where I felt it was rehashing a story that had already been done. I also had a hard time with art in this story, particularly with the facial expressions.

With only 4 issues in total, I’ll probably continue this series on the strength of the Rocket Raccoon/Groot story alone. Hopefully Abnett and Lanning will find a way to bring me into the Annihilators story as well.

  1. Yea, now that I think about it, it was the same ‘ole ‘hero with self-doubt’ story with Quasar, something which was never evident about him as a character before, so it is sorta coming outta left field, and it doesn’t feel original like you’ve pointed out.  Also, why the doubts when you’re an Alpha plus power?  Never really considered Quasar to be such, I don’t think he should be.

  2. Part of the fun of The Gurdians was that they were usually overpowered by their enemies , now they have to much power and it just is’nt very interesting . Although Groot and Rocket are good for a few laughs .
