NOTE: The beginning of this story mirrors the final pages of Venom #8, so read that first if you are pulling/reading that. This one had it all: good humor, great action, great call-backs to older Spidey storylines, and it all drew into a great ending to a really great Spidey event. So, we learn why MJ's power manifestation was so late coming: She'd built up an immunity to Spider-powers because of all those years that she and Peter....shared a toothbrush....yeah, that's it. Great line. We have a call-back to #600 with Peter realizing he can use Ock's Octo-bots to cure the citizens of NYC with the Anti-Venom cure. We also get some decent banter between Peter and his clone-brother Kaine, and Pete somewhat solidifies his secret identity by stripping to his skivvies and putting the costume on Kaine (call-back to Modell almost discovering his secret by entering his lab a few issues ago). Also, Kaine's attempt at Spidey-banter was hilariously awful, but we got to see the "sonic" costume once more. I'm glad that the showdown with the Queen (in human form at least) was handled in Venom #8, setting up the final showdown with giant Spider-Queen at the end. And the prophecy set forth by Madame Web held true that a Spider-Man would be the one to kill the Queen, when Peter had sworn he'd never take a life. The showdown with the spider-zens of NYC on the Empire State Building antenna was great, with Pete using his brains (and a nudge from MJ) to figure out how to defeat the Queen by weakening her link to the Web of Life, so Kaine could take her out with the Spidey/Ms. Marvel version of a Fastball Special. And Kaine used the stingers! So we know that Pete has them, but doesn't use them, due to their lethality. Which tells us that the "The Other" events did take place. Also lending proof to this was Pete's one-off line of "Yeah, I know what that's like," when Kaine explained his aversion to wearing the Red-and-Blues with "The last time I wore that I died and came back with new powers" line. I think it's all but guaranteed that Kaine will be the new Scarlet Spider starting in January. Also, MJ told Pete she loved him. He didn't quite hear it over the commotion, but the look on her face, thanks to the wonderful art of Humberto Ramos, told you everything, even with the final panel of Pete and MJ on top of the ESB with his arm around her. Could Dan Slott be angling to reunite Pete and MJ soon? Maybe with the upcoming issue #700? We have 28 issue for this to happen? Will there be some drama with Carlie? Come to think of it, Pete pretty much forgot about her after she "Spidered-out" and spent the rest of the event on his own until he kicked some Spider butt with his ex. Kind of a shitty boyfriend right now, huh Pete?
