“Panels” is like if you agree with someone, you know, like “Raquel Welch is one great piece of ass, panels.” But then, if you disagree, like “A Lincoln is better than a Cadillac? Panels!” you know? But then, it’s also like if something’s the greatest thing in the world, like “mingia those peppers, panels.” But it’s also like saying “Go to hell!” too. Like, you know, like “Hey Paulie, you got a one inch pecker!” and Paulie says “PANELS!” Sometimes it just means “panels.”

G.I. Combat #0

We met–or at least glimpsed–a lot of Unknown Soldiers in this issue. This dude was by far the scariest.

The Defenders #10
By Matt Fraction, Jamie McKelvie, Mike Norton, Jordie Bellaire, Clayton Cowles or Joe Sabino
What do you get when one of my favorite artists take a moment to channel his inner Steranko while drawing Nick Fury? You get this fantastic sequence of action that moves across the page with that sweet 1960s Steranko style.

Hawkeye #2
By Matt Fraction, David Aja, Matt Hollingsworth, & Chris Eliopoulos
When I first read this sequence it took me a second to realize that Clint was thinking about his shot during the time it took Kate to say “Well, that’s cool.” A brilliant bit of decompression.

Action Comics #0
By Grant Morrison, Ben Oliver, Brian Reber, & Steve Wands
A young victim of persistent domestic violence finding strength in Superman’s cape made of the best moment in the second best issue of Grant Morrison’s Action Comics. Goose bump-inducing.

Let’s go get sushi and not pay. Oh wait wrong movie. I was an average panel of the week schnook.
“Fuck you, Archie. Just for that you’re not in the gang anymore. “
Aja.
Aja.
How its probably pronounced: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=djV11Xbc914
Woah.
[MINOR USM SPOILER]
I loved the panel in Ultimate Comics Spider-Man #14 with “THWIP” written in webbing.
I love that panel as well.
i thought that was going to make it
Both of them are really powerful and fun. I really love this book.
That page from Action Comics 0 was the best one of the week. Great piece of symbolism.
When I opened up Ultimate Spider-Man and saw the “Jerk” panel, I knew it would be a panel of the week.
And not that this is important, but I was subscribing to Uncanny X-Men via Marvel’s “mail-order service” (we would have just called it a “subscription” back then) when I saw the original Kitty Pride panel.
Oh, I’m so old.
I felt the same way when I saw the spiral panels page in Silk Spectre. That book is bloody stunning.
Uncanny X-Men #168 was my first X-men comic. This panel makes me want to re-read that era’s X-men. A nice little twist on the original…
I love the broken up panel technique.
That McKelvie Panel with the gun seems lazy. He didn’t increase the size, like a zoom in, he kinda just seemed to keep it at normal size.
The way the layout on the 1st & 2nd panels is makes it look like Fury has a really wide shoulder & extra arm and it freaks me out a tiny bit.
There. Are. FOUR. Lights!
Picard kicks Kirk’s butt.
I think there were better panels in Punisher, but for me the best panel was in Deadpool…the “I am the Human Flamethrower!!!!!!”, that was laugh out loud hilarious.
Is it me or David Aja has become the fully blown heir-apparent of Mazzucchelli
And then some.
Having said that I do miss the grungy ghettotastic style he had on the first arc of Iron Fist. It was like the best 70s kungfu blaxploitation flick never made.
For me, an important part of the Defenders’ great artwork is Mike Norton who’s getting co-credit. The credits listed above repeat Matt Fraction instead of Mike Norton after Jamie McKelvie.
After discovering Norton this year, I really love his work.
I love David Aja. Like, a lot.
Fraction I’m not overly keen on but having flicked through both issues of Hawkeye, I kinda want to just grab it because Aja is a king.
That Spectre, double page spread is the only good moment of the entire issue of Phantom Stranger. Wish Didio give Brent Anderson more of that to work with in the script.
I didn’t read any of the books in question but i love the Donnie Brasco reference. Forget about it!
The second best issue of Action??? So which was the first ? Please tell me its #6 or #10 the only ones I got (by chance that is)?
The first one.
Love that Spectre spread, very reminiscent of the excellent Tom Mandrake-drawn run from the 90s!
Staz Johnson’s Unknown Soldier is absolutely terrifying too, have to go pick that issue up soon
Hawkeye is like a page flipping piece of art. I had to read this page a few times to get it but once I did I was like “Ah, that is really bad ass and will make panel of the week.”
