The Best of the Week in Panels – 04.18.2012

“You’re Abe Froman?”
“That’s right, I’m Abe Froman.”
“The Panels King of Chicago?”
” … Uh yeah, that’s me.”
“Look, I’m very busy. Why don’t you take the kids and go back to the clubhouse?”
“Are you suggesting that I’m not who I say I am?”
“I’m suggesting that you leave before I have to get snooty.”
“Snooty?”
“Snotty.”
“Snotty?”

Wolverine and The X-Men #9

By Jason Aaron, Chris Bachalo, Tim Townsend or Jaime Mendoza or Al Vey, & Chris Eliopoulos

Broo is by far my favorite character in Wolverine and The X-Men. By far.

Nightwing #8

By Kyle Higgins, Eddy Barrows, Ruy Jose or Eber Ferreira, Rod Reis, & Pat Brosseau

This is a great way to represent the chaotic nature of a fight, yet anchoring it all with one strong dynamic image.

Prophet #24

By Brandon Graham, Farel Dalrymple, Joseph Bergin III, & Ed Brison

I love these equipment breakdown panels. Every comics should have them!

Batman #8

By Scott Snyder, James Tynioin IV, Rafael Albuquerque, Nathan Fairbairn, & Patrick Brosseau

Is there anything better than when Alfred gets the badass, rally the troops moment? I mean, besides bacon.

The Avengers #25

By Brian Michael Bendis, Walter Simonson, Scott Hanna, Jason Keith, & Cory Petit

It’s so nice to see Simonson drawing Thor again. The only thing that would have made it better would have been the classic costume.

Justice League #8

By Geoff Johns, Ivan Reis, Joe Prado, Alex Sinclair, & Patrick Brosseau

Listen, I love Ivan Reis on Aquaman. I think he’s a big part of that book’s success and I’m so happy that Aquaman has a successful book. BUT. But I would probably kill for an Ivan Reis drawn Justice League series. If not kill, I would give someone a strongly worded verbal thrashing.

Uncanny X-Force #24

By Rick Remender, Phil Noto, Dean White, Cory Petit, & Jared K. Fletcher

Oh, there is something gloriously wrong with Rick Remender.

Wonder Woman #8

By Brian Azzarello, Cliff Chiang, Matthew Wilson, & Jared K. Fletcher

This kind of thing never happened to Lynda Carter.

The Manhattan Projects #2

By Jonathan Hickman & Nick Pitarra

This ‘ain’t your mama’s Wernher von Braun.

Comments

  1. Its kind of crazy we don’t get that many gadget breakdowns. Love those things to. I also love the building breakdowns and environment breakdowns.

  2. There was a lot of great panels in Venom 16.

  3. Top quality from Uncanny X-Force, Wolverine & The X-Men, Prophet & The Manhattan Projects!

  4. I audibly gasped when I saw that Wonder Woman panel. I suspected there was a reason he was willing to accept those guns. I didn’t think we’d find out the reason so damn quickly. I’m really enjoying this book.

    • +1 With the audible gasp and Wonder Woman. That was great. Fantastic Book.

    • Agreed wholeheartedly! Love this run!

    • After having read Wonder Woman consistently for almost fifty years, I thought my days of being truly shocked to the point of gasping out loud were behind me. Thank you Brian and Cliff.
[Still, knowing comics as I do, the chance of this happening was on the short list of possibilities.]

At the top of the stack the week it comes out.

  5. I also want Broo to be a member of the Nova Corps.

  6. I think my favorite panel is something I didn’t even notice until someone pointed it out.

In Manhattan Projects, the General asks if anyone can fly. Everyone, including Oppenheimer and Einstein, raises their hands except for Feynman. So hopefully we’re going to see an issue of these people flying soon.

  7. I desperately want that Justice League splash page to become a poster.

  8. Does Ivan reis not sleep? or is he a robot???

He went from blackest night to brightest day to aquaman and now Justice League all one after the other!

  9. I agree on both Broo’s greatness and Rick Remender’s clear emotional issues.

  10. I loved that Thor panel by Simonson. I actually liked his take on the new look… the armor has texture to it, which some artists seem to skip. I also really liked the dejected Cap pic on the page before that. That’s the one that made me realize how much I’d been missing Simonson’s art.

  11. It seems to me that Broo is very similar to how Beast might have been as a 12 year old. I’d love to see more interaction between those two, it seems like Beast would be a great mentor for him.

  12. No one but no one does Thor boots like Simonson. Those are the best feet in comics.

I actually really really like that costume redesign. It’s one of the better redesigns of a Kirby original, which is rare.

  13. My favorite panel from Wolverine & the X-Men was the flea exchange between Beast & Logan. Had me LITERALLY loling on the subway!

  14. I haven’t read my stack this week yet, but it is comforting to see five of the six books I picked up featured here.

  15. X-Force and Wonder Woman are my favorite panels this week! Prophet comes in a close second though. The Thor one kind of bothers me because it seems like his spinning hammer would keep hitting him in the leg. His arm is coming toward us a bit but the arc of the hammer is behind the leg. Maybe I’m just seeing it wrong. Great bunch this week!

  16. Conor, these are great panels!! You really did an excellent job of picking some very good art from this week.

  17. That justice league spread was dramatic as hell, I literally cursed out loud I was so surprised and impacted by it. We need more development on that little story quickly!

  18. When I saw J’onn vs. the League, my jaw hit the floor. Outstanding work from Ivan Reis.

  19. I’m so tempted to make that deadpool image my iPhone lock screen:)

  20. With every passing issue, I love Broo more and more.

  21. great to see nick pitteras art get some love.

  22. that wonder woman drawing looks like cobbie smulders from avengers movie, food for thought warner

  23. Seriously, Phil Noto should just draw everything…ever

  24. I love Broo yearning to be in the Nova Corps, Prophet again intrigues me and have yet to read but am more and more sure I’ll love it, haven’t read my Batman #8 or X-Force but love that Full Metal Jacket or 2 Live Crew reference (however you wanna remember it), glad Phil Noto ended that horrible art before which I did not buy. Sorry random artists name I don’t know but it did not work for that title maybe something more abstract. That Nightwing panel makes me wish I’d have bought it and the Walt Simonson Thor Omnibus is on my list, enjoyed that moment in Avengers #25 which I only bought for him and loved the cover but wasn’t too happy with many panels in that issue. Was Justice League also the Green Arrow issue? I like Stormwatch and would’ve grabbed it had I remembered them being in there or just MM.

  25. Outstanding selection, Conor – impossible to pick a favourite. Remender is truly one sick little monkey (& a genius).

  26. The Prophet panel is TOTALLY Brandon Graham. If you’ve ever read King City, it’s almost like his signature!

  27. Broo. Is. Amazing.
