It’s Official: Fox To Expand X-Men Movie Universe with ‘X-Force’

X-Force_1Well, this story developed quickly. First there were rumors then there was a domain name registration then there was speculation of a big Comic-Con announcement and now there’s official confirmation:

Fox is going to expand their movie mutant empire with the addition of X-Force.

The Hollywood Reporter has the news that Kick-Ass 2 writer/director Jeff Wadlow has been tapped to write the X-Force screenplay with an eye towards possibly also directing.

What will an X-Force team in the Fox mutant movie universe look like? In the comics, X-Force has always been the more aggressively militant of Xavier’s merry mutants. I imagine that the pitch was rather attractive to the studio, “They’re the X-Men, but MORE violent!”

Will this bring the big screen debut of Cable? (Perhaps seeded in the upcoming X-Men: First Class – Days of Future Past time travel story?) Or maybe Shatterstar? Domino?

Perhaps will get more information at Comic-Con, but then the script hasn’t even been written yet so everything is up in the air at this point.

Comments

  1. Here’s a thought. Forget Cable and all that other stuff and use Remender’s team.

  2. This sounds cool although I feel that this is making the movie franchise a little bit more crowded then it need to be but thats just me. But honestly all I want out of a new x-men movie is to have cyclops back leading the team again.

  3. Hmmm.

Remender’s team doesn’t really work without the truckload of continuity that came before it. I assume they would use Cable, Domino, etc. But I’m skeptical about how well characters like that could work in Singer’s universe.

Still, kinda cool. Looking forward to more news about it.

    • I’d love to see Remender’s team but you’re right about the continuity being needed. Oh well, whatever they do and whoever they use I’ll be watching it.

    • Based on what I’ve seen with how they incorporate comic stories in other movies I think it would make sense to do a combination with the idea from Yost/Remenders team paired with the original members or possibly a combination of the original and later members. I doubt they will get Hugh Jackman for this movie but a combination of Cable, Deadpool, Domino, Psylocke, Fantomex ect could be pretty cool.

    • As opposed to Cable who isn’t bound up in excessive continuity?

    • Touché.

But I meant that Remender’s STORY is bound by previous continuity. The entire saga practically relies on the audience’s knowledge of Apocalypse and Archangel. It’s been a while since I read any Cable X-Force, but there are ways to use him as a principle in the cast and not reference his convoluted origins.

But why are we even talking about this? Whatever we end up with won’t even resemble any of the stories that you and I consider when we think of X-Force. Because it’s the Singerverse, and it’s Fox.

  4. My vote for Summer Glau as X-23

  5. I wonder if there will come a day when our moivehouses will be as full of different X-titles as our spinner racks have been.

Is Rex Reed ready for New Exiles??

    • Gan, I hope not. Leave it to Fox to bring down the Super hero movie craze.

If Fox is committed to squeezing money out of the X-Franchise they should invest in a few tv shows or something. I don’t think the money’s there to justify 12-20 X-movies.

  6. Do the X-Statix.

  7. Bet’cha that Wolverine will be prominently displayed on the roster no matter what.

  8. I wonder if these new films will spawn organically from Singer’s already established universe… (sigh) as if

  9. This just gave me happy pants.

I know i’m in the minority but I want to see 90’s X-force. Cable, Domino, Warpath, Boom Boom, Cannonball, Sunspot and Shatterstar. Would be a good way to Intro Deadpool as well.

  10. Sweeeeeeeeet!!!!

  11. This is surprising.

Especially since I’ve been waiting for an actual GOOD X-Men movie since X2. Guess they’ll branch out no matter how uneven this franchise is.

  12. Hugh Jackman’s bank account just breathed a sigh of relief…

  13. In order to make superhero movies more kid-friendly, they’ve toned down the violence and scary elements. We never did get to hear Venom say that he wanted to crack open Spider-Man’s head and suck out his brains, for instance. I’m sure that “War Machine” was changed to “Iron Patriot” because they thought that Moms would have fewer qualms about putting an “Iron Patriot” toy in the shopping cart. “War Machine” sounds too violent. However, X-Force is all about the violence. X-Force is a team that eliminates threats to mutantkind with extreme prejudice.

    • Well, it won’t be all about violence in the movie. You can count on that.

    • Well, there will be a lot of violence but it’ll be mostly bloodless and 2/3 CGI. That said, now all I want in the world is to see a Paul Verhoeven directed “X-Force” movie.

    • I don’t see how Venom needs to eat brains to be Venom. To me Carnage was the cannibal, Venom wasn’t (Eddie Brock at least, I’m sure there are instances in the comics of him doing that but I’ve never felt that was essential to the character). They have toned down these movies, pretty much most movies. I don’t when/how/why that started happening but now I think it’s more pronounced. I recall people telling me an R-rating is a death sentence for a movie (when did that happen?).Some of these films need to be R-rated, it’s just the nature of the source material.

  14. Jason Statham as Cable. Y’all feelin’ me?

    • No.

I am most definitely not feeling you.

I want Stephen Lang for Cable.

    • Not enough star power.

    • There’s a little more to it than that. And if anything, Statham has too much star power. Lang would not only be better for the role, but a more realistic get.

    • Dolph Lundgren.

    • Star power isn’t even needed to carry one character, even a key one like Cable when it’s X-Force and connected to X-men. They can use a handful of quality actors, a few star power roles and someone like Stephen Lang as Cable would make him a star and shine surrounded by a good cast with better resumes. Talented Indie and mainstream credibility bring the formula a movie like this needs. And I think Rated R with a few really good teasers followed by an excellent trailer showcasing substance could let the bloody violence be delivered right and not B flick level.

  15. As a long time X everything mutant reader, I’d love to see a mix bag of characters from the origInal X-force, Cyclop’s initial black ops team, Remender’s Uncanny X-Force and the current Cable & X-Force. Leave the current Uncanny X-Force alone cause that’s just too much baggage and a direct spin off of Remender’s team anyway which is no place for a story to start. Take the black ops stealth approach in a universe where the X-men exist and my proposed mixed team consisting of pillar founding & continuing newer characters like Cable,Domino,Deadpool,Warpath, X-23, Fantomex, Dr.Nemesis, Archangel,Wolverine and Sunspot with the introduction of Hope. This is a big roster but covers many bases like ethnic diversity, the different teams over the years, ties to X-men, weapon X project, and Apocalypse as well as the Messiah/endangered species, and Days of the Future Past windows opened. Plenty of characters for strong violence and leadership in Cable & Wolverine. Established past told through conversations between Cable, Domino & Deadpool as well as Cable’s existence made clearly aware by Logan. Dr Nemesis has the smaller but important scenes with Fantomex opening up future story plots if they don’t already base this movie around him with big meaning for Hope & Archangel for more important and pivotal sub plot scenes that expand the movies story, connections to time sliding, Apocalypse/Days of Future Past and the franchise altogether. All the while leaving room for cameos or name drops for Psylocke, Colossus, Cannonball,Boom Boom and whoever else could be significant for a sequel. The black ops plot with all those strong connections revolving around Fantomex is my synopsis and think that could work much smoother than it sounds. But I’m dreaming of a perfect mix of the X-Force history made by Marvel studios, not Fox.

  16. Using characters from the film universe, or ones that will be introduced soon:

    Leader: Wolverine.

“Sanctioned” Team: Psylocke. Deadpool. Angel. Beast. Moonstar.

Wolverine’s Backup Plan: Deathstrike. Callisto. Arclight. Mystique. Juggernaut.

Wolverine’s Backup Backup Plan: Rogue. Havok. Siryn. Cyclops. Phoenix.

    Introduces Cable, Hope, Archangel, Apocalypse.
