Heads Up: DC Comics Previews – April 2012

Being a comic fan can be tough. With so many publishers printing more and more books, canceling titles and starting new ones, it can be daunting when you head to the comic book shop on a Wednesday to know exactly what’s coming out.

The current system of presenting and ordering comics three months ahead of their release as set forth by the sole comics distributor, Diamond Comics, doesn’t make it any easier either. We’re not a fan of that system, we think it’s slowly strangling comics to death, but we realize it’s a harsh reality of how the industry works and we definitely don’t want you to miss out on any of the cool comics being published.

And so, as opposed to regurgitating the list of comics solicited in Previews each month, we present to you some of the highlights of things you probably won’t want to miss out on.

SPOILER WARNING in order to get people to order comics, the publishers have a funny habit of revealing what’s happening in the books. If you don’t want anything at all to be spoiled, then you’ll probably want to skip this post and take your chances with your pre-orders and/or your shopping.

The End is Just a Little Harder When Brought About By Friends

April sees the conclusion of several storylines in the first wave of new DCU titles, and for a few of them that also means the end of their series run. We’re particularly despondent over the cancellation of O.M.A.C., a surprising favorite amongst critics. That said, it’s frustrating to see any of these titles go so quickly.

Not that time heals all wounds. We’re pretty sad to see Northlanders go too, even after a robust 50 issue run.

One last thing. Even though these are all final issues, fair weather fans will still want to pick up Men of War #8, featuring a Frankenstein in WWII story by Jeff Lemire and Matt Kindt. Co-starring G.I. Robot! Talk about going out with a bang!

Comments

  1. Man, I am going to miss the hell out of O.M.A.C. That’s been one of the best comics reading experiences I can remember. DiDio and Giffen have made it on to my bucket list of creators I need to meet.

  2. “We’re pretty sad to see Northlanders go too, even after a robot 50 issue run.”

Oh man, I wish that weren’t a typo. Shocking ending to the series: the vikings were robots all along!!!

  3. Lemire, Kindt, Frankenstein and G.I. Robot? Turns out I’m going to buy an issue of Men of War.

  4. Well Men of War will get me to buy one of their issues.

  5. What? No Absolute Sinestro Corps mention?

And I’m sure it’s been said a million times before, but I can’t recommend Starman highly enough.

  6. OMAC has just been all-out crazy fun. And, for me, that’s what makes its cancellation especially dissapointing. I’ve often read comments on various sites where people bemoan the lack of fun comics. Then one comes out and it doesn’t get any traction.

Was this simply a case of people letting blind DiDio hate prevent them from picking up the book? Perhaps we will never know…

  7. Im looking forward to the trade paperback of the starman omnibus as well having never read the series myself but heard so much praise from the gang here on the site. Im sure the hardcover would be much nicer but probably way more expensive as well so this seems like a better purchase to me.

    • I got some of the hardcover edition on sale pretty cheap a while back. Starman is some might good readin’! I think you’ll enjoy it!

    • Well, it’s $30 for the paperback and $50 for the hardcover. And you can probably find them $25-$30 online somewhere. Personally, I think it’s worth a little extra to have this series in hardcover, but maybe check out the first trade and then make up your mind.

  8. Nightwing is going to go into the Court of Owl story line too….and for some reason the origin of the head ‘Talon’ (I guess you call him that cause there’s several on the Batman cover) fighting against the family. Weird. Not sure why such an important plot point is in that book.

  9. I didn’t realize this until today, but it seems that Tiny Titans is ending in March with issue #50. Too bad. I liked that book.

  10. That Batwoman trade is going to be one pretty looking book.

  11. The Legion Lost trade isn’t actually collecting the recent series. Instead, it’s a paperback reprint of a hardcover collection of a story from over a decade ago. Still well worth checking out, though.

  12. Can’t wait to get my hands on Animal Man but I was hoping Swamp Thing would be released along side it as from what I’ve heard they seem to be closely entwined. I’m also really excited to read Starman.

  13. I wish they would give Animal Man and Swamp thing the HC treatment….

    • I bet they will, just when there’s more than 6 issues to package together. I tend to prefer hardcovers that have a little more heft to them.
