Summer Blockbuster: Thanos Takes Marvel to INFINITY and Beyond

Thanks to USA Today, we have new details on Marvel’s (late) summer event, a cosmic kerfuffle entitled “Infinity.” It all starts with May 4th’s Free Comic Book Day issue (details below) and continues in August with the launch of a six-issue mini-series by Jonathan Hickman with art by Jim Cheung, Jerome Opena and Dustin Weaver. The primary event tie-ins include Hickman’s ongoing Avengers and New Avengers. The story sees the typical Avengers cast alongside the Guardians of the Galaxy and Inhumans (a group Hickman seems eager to usher into prominence) squaring off against Thanos and the usual suspects of Skrull and Kree. At the center of it all, we’ve got the Builders, who still sound an awful lot like the hulking marble dudes from Prometheus.  And it’s not just an event for the cosmic heavy-weights. Look for street level types like Daredevil to get involved as well.

That coda to Marvel’s The Avengers didn’t simply herald the mad Titan’s arrival to Marvel’s Cinematic Universe. It’s also a new age for purple stuff in your favorite Marvel comics. Cosmic icons like Nova and the Guardians of the Galaxy are already joining the vanguard in Marvel NOW!, and Jonathan Hickman’s toying with the fate of the Infinity Gems in the pages of New Avengers. We’ll also be seeing that Thanos origin story from Jason Aaron and Simone Bianchi soon. It’s evident that all of that has been building toward something, but what exactly.

Today Marvel announced its Free Comic Book Day offering, and it’s a pretty clear sign as to Marvel’s trajectory beyond the Age of Ultron:

  1. Sounds interesting, and you can’t beat a creative team like that!

  2. When I read the headline I finally felt event fatigue for the first time in my fifteen years of comic book reading. Then I saw the creative team. Yes. Please. Haha.

  3. Hmm, the Avengers, X-Men, Guardians of the Galaxy, Fantastic Four, Inhumans, & Superior Spider-Man look like they might have their hands full on this one, lets hope they call in Buzz Lightyear & Star Command for a little back up.

  4. Gotta be done, always nice to have more Hickman!

  5. Neato! I’ll leapfrog over that Ultron event right into this one. I trust that Hickman will write something a bit more unique than Thanos gets the Gauntlet again. As exciting as all this Marvel work he is doing, I hope that it doesn’t derail his creator owned stuff like Manhattan Projects and the East of West.

  6. I’ll give anything with Thanos a try. Not a Hickman fan, but I’m willing to give him yet another chance to prove he’s half as good as some people swear.

  7. Avatar photo fatsoraven">fatsoraven (@http://www.twitter.com/veryraresecrete) says:

The ad titan? Is Thanos going to thwart the Avengers with great marketing?

    ;+)

  8. Awesome creative team. Thinking that Infinity is going to be 2014’s event.

  9. This looks promising, can’t beat the creative team! Hopefully its not another 3X a month, $4 title like Marvel is giving us lately!

  10. A Marvel Event where heroes unite against a common foe? Well, that can’t be right.

  11. Okay so, in Hickman’s New Avengers, the multiverse is collasping, the Illuminati have convened to reunite the Infinity Gems, Thanos is associated with the Infinity Gems, the main villain in this event is Thanos… busting through a yellow crystalline wall… yellow is the colour of the Reality Gem…

This event is about an alternate universe Infinity Guantleted Thanos breaking through realities, destroying universes Anti-Monitor style and coming to the 616 MU.

I’m like 95% certain of this.

  12. If this is going to be the next event I am totally done for it. I haven’t read an event since Secret Invasion so maybe I’m due.

But please Marvel: No more group writing or committee’s here. Just let Hickman write the whole thing for god sakes. I’m fine with different artists cause there is NO WAY Cheung could make it timely.

  13. I planned on trade waiting Ultron and love Thanos, and a creative team who has done some great works, intelligent stories like Manhattan Projects and the FF Celestials & Galactus epic arc I need an omnibus of. Then Cheung who did The Children’s Crusade ( a Marvel core event that was self contained, gotta love that) and Young Avengers which was 12 way more exciting and unexpected issues of a story involving Kang in a way that’s an instant classic, and the Young Avengers : Childrens Crusade one-shot. Infinity and affecting all those core titles from every Marvel corner, my only worry is it isn’t too many tie ins with all them series dbl shipped. If its self contained w one shots I’ll die happy.

  14. This looks awesome, even if part of me thinks we will see the Ultimate Universe, New Universe, Age of Apocalypse, Ultraverse and 2099 worlds collapses with the survivors migrating to the 616 Universe

  15. Do you think Marvel mixed up this press release with the Angela/Age of Ultron announcement? Because as much as I hesitate to believe anything I read online on April 1st, this sounds legit.

  16. Cool, pulling from, or going back to, a previous maxi/mini series/event to tell a tale that involves multiple universes, timelines and/or realities to defeat an evil that threatens them all. This has never been done before! Ever! So fresh! So new!

I heard they are already planning on 2 follow-up events, ‘Infinite Infinity’ and ‘Final Infinity’.

Jokes aside, if this is for real and not an April Fools joke, it actually sounds fun/interesting.

  17. More Hickman Inhumans? Am I the only one who did not like how he handled those characters during his Fantastic Four run? (Maybe I’m just sore on how he broke up Ronan & Crystal?)

I’ll probably read this, as it’s hard to pass up Thanos. That said, I’m mixed on Hickman, so I’ll be going in with muted expectations . . .

  18. Considering only 5 people have commented on this update I guess not many are excited for this.

But I am! Again, after seeing my original post, I am excited this is just a Hickman only affair. These committee run events just cause a clusterfuck of issues in regards to pacing and characterization so seeing one writer is a good thing. But with the artists involved I am confused on why this isn’t just an Avengers-centric mini event. I guess with Thanos returning and with a movie coming out they gotta make this a big deal. But the stories in Avengers and New Avengers seem to indicate this is where they lead up. So not making this a crossover event seems to be a ridiculous thing.

Having said all that this will be the first Marvel event since Secret Invasion I’ll be buying in single issues. So that’s something I guess.
