FANEXPO 2012: Winter Soldier: Brubaker OUT, LaTour IN

Since his interview with Tom Spurgeon earlier this summer, we knew that Ed Brubaker’s time at Marvel was coming to an end. With Fatale firmly launched as a hit book over at Image Comics, and the recent announcement of Brubaker leaving writing duties on Captain America after 8 years (being replaced by Rick Remender), and with his work on Avengers Vs. X-Men being complete the last dangling plot thread for Brubaker was Winter Soldier.

Well, today at FanExpo in Toronto, that plot thread gets resolution as Marvel Comics announced, oddly enough at the Avengers Vs X-Men panel that Brubaker would be departing Winter Soldier and Jason LaTour would be coming on as the new writer in January February 2013. We’ve know LaTour mainly from his spectacular artistic work on various projects at Marvel and the excellent indie book Loose Ends.

Marvel provided the following image along with the snappy marketing line:

New series writer Jason Latour kicks off the New Year for Bucky with a New Mission, New Enemies and New Ways To Die.

It was speculated as to whether or not Winter Solider would remain post-Brubaker, so it’s good to see them sticking with the character who has been a surprise hit since Brubaker did the unthinkable in resurrecting Bucky Barnes in the pages of Captain America.  Unknown if artist Butch Guice will stick on the title and if the look of the book will keep the 70s spy/espionage feel. But given the “new” take on the title, we wouldn’t be surprised if we see a new visual look to Winter Soldier

Update! Brubaker has confirmed via Twitter that he is done at Marvel Comics… for now.

Comments

  1. Unless something is announced in the next few months, Ed Brubaker is officially done with Marvel? I say, good for him. If that means more independent – non Big two – work from Mr. Brubaker, I’m cool with that.

  2. NOOO! I was hoping Brubaker would stick around. Brubaker’s done a great job on this tittle I’m sad to see it go.

  3. I heard from a very reliable source that Ed Brubaker is going to be focusing more on TV work in the near future, which is probably why he’s been slowly sliding off Marvel work.

  4. Sucks to see Brubaker leave such a stellar series, but Fatale is so good that frankly I don’t care if he never writes another Marvel book again.

  5. Aww man!

  6. No matter what he does in his future, Criminal will always be one of my favorite books ever.

  7. Cool cover.

  8. At the risk of stoking controversy, I find it interesting to contrast the way an Ed Brubaker leaves Marvel with the way a Rob Liefeld leaves DC. In general, I like it when series or collaborations are allowed to come to a natural end. Even if the next guy undoes everything you wrote, at least you got to write it. Hearing person after person quit in the middle of their runs because they just can’t take working for the company anymore sours the reading experience, among other things.

    • Well, a five star writer gradually leaving top books to switch over to creator-owned is a bit different than a widely disliked writer/artist being thrown onto three Z-tier books at once and then quiting months later because of editorial fiddling. not quite like for like.

It is notable that the editor who tried to f**kup Hawkman for RL was the same editor who forced John Rozum off of Static Shock (Harvey Richards). amazing that he’s still at DC.

  9. It’s a shame we won’t have Brubaker writing Marvel titles for a while, but the fact that he is leaving on good terms and being classy means he will most likely make his way back at some point when he has a really good story to tell. And that works for me.

  10. Bummer. I was really digging Winter Soldier. But, its Ed’s creator owned work like Sleeper that got me following him in the first place. Cant wait to see whats in store.

  11. I like & buy the Winter Soldier series, but I’m okay with him leaving. I’d much rather read a non-superhero Brubaker comic like Criminal or Fatale. You can tell that his heart is really in those books as compared to the recent Marvel work. If he can work on his own projects on his own terms why wouldn’t he rather do that? I look forward to what he comes up with.

  12. I am saddened to see him leave. Brubaker has done God-like things over @ Marvel, yet I feel so glad for him to be able to go out on his own & get more money through Image with the really awesome Fatale. Will stick with Winter Soldier after Brubaker for a few issues, but if its not clicking, then I’m out.

  13. I love Brubaker, but it was time for a change on the Captain America/Bucky titles.

I hope this leads to more Brubaker penned books at Image.

  14. Isn’t LaTour known more as an artist? He did some nice work in that recent Wolverine issue with Raphael Albuquerque.

  15. Wait…this means he won’t take my money every month? It makes me sad…been one of the most consistently great books in years
