I just want to re-affirm the notion of how much iFanboy has done for me as a comic reader. I live in a place with absolutely NO comic shop or even places to buy them. All my purchasing has to be done online or when I drive to a bigger town like an hour or so away. I first started listening to iFanboy in 2005 when they first started putting out the podcast. It was like long lost friends that I hadn't talked to in ages. I felt that I "clicked" with these guys even though I had never actually met them. I found their reviews fair, honest, and reliable. Over time I have been able to determine, usually based on genre, which of them to listen into more when making purchase considerations. But they definitely have reached a very trusted place in my decision making and have served as an enabler for me to find all kinds of titles that I never would have known about on my own. It is reasons like iFanboy that make me thankful for the internet and the opportunity it provides to really be part of a community of like-minded individuals who share the same interests and passions and can "come together" in a fashion to discuss those things. I think that is the basis for the worth of any review that is posted online. For me I pay little to no attention to a random review on a random website so I can't really say much for people posting in other locations. Like if I am looking to buy something on Amazon I rarely pay attention to the user reviews posted there. I guess I have not built up a trust factor with that community. But a place like iFanboy is somewhere I know that people are going to give level headed and fair reviews 99.9% of the time. And especially the opinions and views expressed by the triumvirate of Ron, Josh, and Conor.
While I am not interested in arguing vehemently on any subject like this I did just want to say I would take issue with anyone who broadcasts the opinion that the internet and more specifically sites such as this one have not had an impact on people to try other things. If not for iFanboy I would not be reading 90% of the titles I so enjoy today.
"Love Conquers All" lol. Thanks for the link to Robotic Fish Tales and also this great article about comics in their simples and purest forms.
Reading stories like this however makes me wish I had a comic shop at all. Living in a town without one makes me cherish the time I spend in them even more though when I do find one to visit. Thank goodness for things like the internet and iFanboy or I would be totally lonely.
88 degrees at 4 a.m. is not right...as you say Conor. But as Josh would say:
That's fucked up.
It must be like something short of winning the lottery to be admitted to the inner realm of the iFanboy writing staff.
Congratulations to you all.
So I guess I have an affinity for Morrison's run on that book because it was a big part in getting me back into comics. Now, having said that...I have purchased the run for my collection and have re-read it since that time. I do see flaws now that I did not see then because I was not accustomed to really seeing those when I first read it. But I guess for me it will always rank a little higher because it enabled me to return this world I had neglected for a decade.
I was out of town over this weekend in Arkansas and I took my 3 sons and also my brother-in-law to the movies to see Iron Man on Saturday night. My kids were super-excited (twin boys who are 14 and also an 8 year old) to see the movie and were afraid that it would be sold-out when we got there. I told them, "Surely not, we are in Arkansas after all...I am sure that the movie won't sell out." Much to my surprise the 6:20 showing we originally went for was in fact sold out. So we had to wait for the 7:00 showing. About 15 minutes after buying our tickets for that...it sold out as well. We had to wait in an extremely long line just to get into the theater. And we were at a decent sized theater with 10 screens and about 300 seats in each theater. So...if it goes down like that enough times at a majority of other theaters across the country it should do well.
Having said that, it was of course awesome. And it was interesting to get my brother-in-law's opinion of the movie. Because he is about the farthest thing from a "comic book fan" and he loved the movie. So it was good to see it catered to both audiences very well.
