This is a somewhat uneven issue which is probably inevitable considering it is handled by four separate creative teams. This epilogue for the massively long Second Coming crossover does what the end of every event does, it deals with the aftermath and sets up the new status quo and directions for the characters and books involved.
In the first of the four chapters, handled by the New Mutants' Zeb Wells we see the immediate aftermath, bones being set, prosthetics being attached, etc. I found the image of the large machinery needed to set Colossus' arm fun but couldn't help but wonder why he wouldn't just switch to flesh form so the whole thing would be easier. The best moment here is between Magneto and Hope. With a father figure like Cable it makes sense she would feel a connection with Magneto and the developing relationship there certainly sets up some interesting possibilities for the future. Oh and apparently people reset Hope if you hadn't picked up on that yet.
The second chapter deals with Cable's funeral and specifically Hope's grief. Hope's words about Cable are actually pretty fitting and resonated far better for me than anything In Fraction's funeral for Nightcrawler. Oh and apparently people are afraid or weirded out by her. She is very alienated. And Cyclops is pissed at Rogue for not following orders, I guess, so that sets up something important for Legacy going forward, I guess.
The third section deals with the fall out of X-Force's existence having come to light, in particular the personal implications to Logan. The future of X-Force is also revealed in a move that seems to be a clear case of sales dictating direction for a title rather than story. Even the full page splash of the reveal is obvious, gratuitous marketing and not storytelling.
The fourth has Beast quiting, again, and people trying to get back to normal or cope in the aftermath of the big battle. And there is the big reveal that Second Coming wasn't for nothing and a new, exciting direction is coming at you. Except it doesn't manage to feel that new or that exciting. I think that this speaks to the nature of the X-books for the last 5-6 years. It is a big development in the lives of the characters, it will rock their world and yet it is strangely not that big a deal to the reader. The thing of it is that mutants coming back isn't really much of a story and it is stories that you get caught up in, not the status quo. There is no drama, no tension inherent mutants being born again. Sure you can build a story around that but it is not actually, in and of itself, a story. The X-Men need new exciting stories not another new exciting status quo. Please.
