I love all things noir regardless of medium so I really wanted to like this series but I just don’t. The first issue was good but I really struggled to finish this one. I just don’t have a strong enough understanding of the X-Men mythos to really enjoy this. I can see how long time X-fans who get all the references to people and places would love this but too many of them go over my head. I also don’t really see where the story is going. For a four issue mini series it seems to be moving pretty slow. The first two issues seem mainly devoted to introducing all the various characters without all the much plot. I am just getting back into reading a bunch of the X-books again so maybe after I have refreshed my x-knowledge I will pick this up as a trade and really understand and enjoy it.

Sidebar: As I said I am just starting to get back into reading x-books after many many years off. These are the books I am currently reading: Cable, X-Force, Astonishing X-Men, Uncanny X-Men, and X-Men Legacy. Cable and X-Force are hands down my favorite of the bunch. @ any x-fans, are there any other x-books I should be reading?

Story: 2 - Average
Art: 3 - Good

  1. I’ve heard great things about X-Men: First Class, I haven’t read a whole lot of them my self, I think I got the first 5 issues but dropped them b/c of monitary issues. Also, you simply cannot go wrong with the Merc with a Mouth…Deadpool…even though he’s been pulled into big events the book is strong and is seriously one of the funniest things out there. I had to put the last issue down b/c I was laughing so hard.

I’ve never read any Cables or X-Forces are they good?

     Nice review and I concur.

  2. I actually do read Deadpool as well and couldn’t agree more. It is one of the books I look forward to most each month. I have picked up X-Men: First Class several times at the store but never actually bought it, maybe I’ll give it a try.

Cable is really good, the first few issues were a little slow but the last 6 or so have been great. This book is very much out of continuity with the other X-Books but at some point this book is going to come crashing back into that continuity in a big way.

X-Force is probably my favorite Marvel book right now. The writing, story and art are top notch. It is full of action and is definitely bloodier than most Marvel books. Wolverine and X-23 are really let loose in this one. Both these books are great examples of how Cyclops is taking the X-Men in a different direction now that Xavier is totally out of the picture. Plus Domino has been part of the team for the past few issues and she is one of my all time favorite characters.

  3. Huh, and here I thought this was a standalone noir story, for which you don’t need any knowledge of the X-Men canon.

  4. It’s not a part of the larger ongoing X-Men continuity but all of the characters are from the X-Men cannon. Mainly classic villains and heroes recast in a noir world. Enjoyment of this story will definitely be much greater if you know a lot about the X-men’s history.

  5. What USPUNX said.  You don’t NEED the knowledge…but the story probably reads a tad differently if you do.
