At this point, I am getting disappointed with the Second Coming crossover. Chapter six was horrible, chapter seven was decent, and now we have chapter eight, another average story. Before I get into the analysis of the issue, I will first start off with a chapter eight summary.
While everyone is recuperating from Pierce's attack, Hope blames herself for the X-Men's suffering. Cable responds that Bastion will keep on killing mutants regardless if she leaves. Next an offshore explosion occurs and the X-Men find a dome enveloping over Utopia and San Francisco. Right away Cyclops sends Iceman and Archangel to try to stop the dome, but both fail. The dome also descends into the ocean. Meanwhile, Bastion is congratulated for his success.
By the oil rig ruins, X-Club tries to analyze how to get rid of the dome. Immediately the Avengers (Bucky Cap, Iron Man, Thor, Hawkeye, and Spider-Woman) try to help X-Club. Thor tries to smash the dome with his hammer but is unsuccessful. Next Namor, Cyclops, and Magma fly over the Golden Gate Bridge and spot a small silver dome that is powering the larger dome. Back at Utopia, Hope decides to stay and fight along with the X-Men. Later, Iceman tries to attack the dome only to be choked by a metallic arm. Nimrod Sentinels arrive at the scene.
Already at chapter eight of the crossover I expected more action rather than talking. In other words, I felt the issue did not need to use most the time making preparations on what is to come for the X-Men. Instead Carey should have started writing the Nimrods arrival near the start so that the X-Men can battle them throughout the issue and can try to figure how to destroy the dome at the same time. I can see how this is a good set up for the next issue of X-Force, but because the previous chapters from Uncanny X-Men and New Mutants were a letdown, I expected this issue to pick up the slack very quickly.
Finally the review comes down to the interior artwork. Here I find myself part of the small minority who actually think Greg Land's art is actually good. In my opinion, there are several reasons why I enjoy his art: His style is so clean and character poses are detailed. Although I do get thrown off by his usage of same character models for multiple characters.Truthfully I would rather have Land do the interior artwork for Uncanny than Dodson.Terry Dodson draws the characters in a cartoonish way. These are harsh times for mutants and the X-Men are way past being drawn like cartoon characters.
Art: 4 - Very Good
" Truthfully I would rather have Land do the interior artwork for Uncanny than Terry Dodson."
I feel like this is saying, I’d rather sit in horse shit than elephant shit. Both are awful smelling piles of steaming awfulness, but the horse shit dries faster and will cover less surface area.
I know that both these artists are not that great. I’m just stating that I prefer looking at Land’s over Dodson.
