While it was the use of Deathlok that interested me in picking this book up, I had no idea just how entertained I would be. In what I kind of perceive as the first use of Steve Rogers purely as a character rather than as a cog in the bigger story of the Marvel universe status quo, Aaron just delivers a first class superhero story. There's nothing here that's beholden to the bigger story, yet it uses Steve's return to give the story an extra layer in the interaction between him and Wolverine.
Basically two plot threads run simultaneously, laying the groundwork to the rest of the story in issues to come. On the one hand you have Steve and Logan out drinking in bars across the world, ruminating on the death and rebirth of Cap, and Cap's gratitude in turn for the fact that Logan stayed with the Avengers. It's got great emotional beats and excellent characterisation. While Cap finds certain aspects of Wolvie's past uncomfortable, he refuses to judge him, which seems right given Steve's own background as the ultimate soldier. Meanwhile, there's a gradual sense of impending troubles as Deathloks travel from the future to kill numerous people important to that future, leading to the last page reveal that they plan to kill Cap to death all over again. Sure, it's The Terminator done Marvel style, but wasn't that character always intended to be a reflection of The Terminator when it was first created (forgive me if I'm wrong on that one). Anyway, what we're left with is purely entertaining comics. It's not overwrought, it's not tied to anything else, it's just a really good action story with, by the way, some glorious art from Garney. Great fun.
