Wolverine Weapon X #1 isn’t a bad comic.
Jason Aaron’s writing is good – as it generally always is – and Ron Garney’s art perfectly matches the gritty and violent nature of the book.
But the story, the plot – the thing that’s meant to hook me and bring me back next month – was, to put it mildly, under whelming.
How often can Wolverine be tasked with dismantling another reiteration of Weapon X? Seriously. I understand this was a first issue, and it has to set up the five-part arc, but at $3.99 and from a creative team I expected so much from (admittedly, maybe too much) this was such a let down.
Wolverine Weapon X #1 is not bad; I didn’t read it and cringe at bad dialogue; I didn’t recoil in horror at bad art – because none of it is ‘bad.’ But it was disappointing, and unless Aaron has got some major twist planned, I won’t be sticking with this book past issue two.
Art: 4 - Very Good
There is no need for a third Cube… They’ll never get out of it and if they do – they get shot.
I have to agree, this was disappointing considering how high my hopes were. Even a writer of Aaron’s caliber couldn’t avoid going over a lot of standard Wolverine tropes again. I admit, the script was still good and I liked the art. I’m still hoping that once things get going and there’s less need to pander to the movie, Aaron might give us some innovation.
I may pick up issue 2 but I think I will wait and see what the reaction for the first arc is. Then maybe pick up the trade.
