In the wake of the Wolverine film coming out (raise of hands on who is excited about this?…Yeah I thought so) Marvel has reprinted some of Wolverine’s biggest stories. One is Logan’s birth in Weapon X, then the early 2000’s Origins arc, and this title I am about to review.

This is the (now) famous Claremont run of Wolverine. Basically we see Logan trying to be less feral and get the girl of his dreams. To be honest I dont know if this is the firstĀ use or mentuon of Logan being tied to Japan, but this has definitely been used in a lot more in future storylines. Now I am not a big reader of Chris Claremont, all I have heard about the man is that he was considering one of the greatest comic book writers of all time….and then age/time caught up with him. Well I can say for sure if this is the best story he ever wrote, but it’s pretty entertaining. I mean it’s very old school; where characters tend to think more then talk; and very corny diaologue. But for the most part this is what I come to expect from a Wolverine comic.

Now there is a reason to pick this up; and that is the great art of Frank Miller….Yes that Frank Miller, the crazy dude…..the dude who has gone from great comic book writer/artist to ‘The Spirit’ director (no that isnt progess people). Now during this time, or afterwards, Miller was working on his famous Daredevil run. What I can say is that Miller is a fantastic artist. I wish he would try and do some artwork now a days. He brought some interesting pencils and panel layouts to this mini. There is some Uncanny issues with a different artist; and that made me upset cause I wanted more of Miller.

So I might not be the biggest Wolverine fan in the world; but this is some pretty damn good comics. It’s enough old school to get with the older comic fans, but it’s modern/revolutionary enough to gain new readers. I have a pretty damn good feeling no use of this story will be used for the Wolverine film….which is a shame. Cause other then Sin City I would love to see some type of Frank Miller influence in a film.

Story: 4 - Very Good
Art: 5 - Excellent

  1. it’s in the wake of a movie that hasn’t come out yet?

but you’re right. it’s a classic comic with just a little bit extra in there. nice review

  2. Yep, I always found this series a notch below a 5/5 perfect rating. I guess considering the time when it came out, though, it was quite groundbreaking and revolutionary. But I’ve just never been too big a fan of Wolvie in Japan fighting ninjas. I like Weapon X better. I would’ve loved to have seen Claremont and Miller team up for a Wolvie story again, though. Can you imagine a slightly more mature Miller drawing Logan? This series basically crystalized Wolverine’s persona as a lead character–but Miller’s always been better at REvamping pre-established characters. And in my opinion Claremont’s x-writing, overall, didn’t peak until a few years later. Imagine a sequel to this series coming out sometime in 1985-1988: wow.
