At the end of Schism, Cyclops has a great phrase which I’m sure will be remembered for a long time because it really was so fitting for a final issue: “It feels like I finally graduated.”

While that may have been the expressed feeling of only one of the old X-crew, this issue shows that Aaron has taken this theme and really expanded it to the entire group. The students have become the teachers and we are all better for it. The possibilities for character growth and story arc opportunities expand greatly by taking this approach.

Let’s take our central hero as an example: Wolverine has spent almost his entire comic book life solving problems with his claws and so it was very refreshing to see this new series begin by placing this character into a role that provides a great opportunity to grow Wolverine as a character. As headmaster and de facto leader of the Westchester group, Wolverine has to temper his emotions and struggle with controlling himself despite a history of positive reinforcement that letting his anger get the best of him creates successful results.

So it is with all the old crew…by rebuilding the school and making the X-men of the 80s and 90s its teachers this series proves that while Cyclops may have been the first to recognize that his life has taken a turn, the mutants in Westchester are living it.
