If you listen carefully, you can hear the sound of a million fanboys screaming.  This run is both beautiful and infuriating.  Infuriating in the rapt attention it draws, and how sparing the backstory is.  This isn't entirely a bad thing, because it truly allows the imagination to run wild.  From the landmarks along the way, to the roles of beloved characters, one can't help but wondered what happened.  What's the story behind Black Bolt, and what could have happened to him to fall so far?  What was Pym's final, epic battle like?  Who is the President and -- well, that last one just may be revealed.  The funny thing about this arc is that in terms of the major plot points, there's no real surprises.  Did anyone think that Hawkeye would get through this unscathed?  Do we really believe that Logan will stick to his pacifism?  Millar and McNiven are weaving a tale that's simple, elegant and extremely open, allowing the fan to fill in the gaps... and manages to do that last bit in a way that doesn't seem lazy, as these things often do, but rather make the story what it is.  I read a blurb earlier this week that described this as a career-defining arc and, at least so far, I can't disagree with that sentiment one bit.
