If there's one thing about this comic that makes it worth the price of admission, it's that script by Jason Aaron. It's absolutely note perfect, even when the story itself occasionally strays into X-cliche. In the opening sequence covering Cyclops' contingency plan for Wolverine going rogue, there's barely any script at all, just sound effects, and that's exactly right. When the X-Men stand off with Aaron's old Ghost Rider characters, as they argue over who gets to take on the possessed Logan, the dialogue is snippy, zippy and at times downright hilarious. When the action begins again towards the end, it kicks off with a nice one liner from Cyke ("You take point, be my guest"), before returning to that same minimalism he used in the beginning, leavened cleverly by flicking to news commentary of the events in Nob Hill.
Accompanying all this is Daniel Acuna on art and I kind of like it. If nothing else it's way ahead of Guedes, if not nearly as pretty as Jefte Palo. There's a simplified, minimalist feel and he tells a story well with plenty of use of expression on his character's faces. It has a feeling that makes me think of an independent art style fed through the Marvel filter. Dig that Jae Lee cover too.
As mentioned, I can't help feeling a slight sense of deja vu in the plot itself. Where the Weapon X and Astonishing Spidey/Wolvie stories have struck me as total originals, I do think we've done the "trawl through the mindscape" thing before. No doubt I'm wrong, but it's certainly a general X-Men trope that it does feel a little repetitive. I don't want to sound like I'm too disappointed though, because it's a really rollicking read. Infused with a similar grindhouse spirit to Aaron's stunning Ghost Rider run, this book seems totally self contained and nothing but out and out fun.
