In the age of arcs written for trade, it seems that the one and done issue is a more and more infrequent occurrence. This particular story is a example of how great it can be when it is done well. Wolverine's girlfriend wants to throw him a surprise birthday party with all his superhero buddies and an unfortunate confluence of events makes him miss it.
Aaron proves once again that character is one of his great strengths and he does wonderful work with just about everyone in the issue, even if they only appear on one page or panel. There were genuinely funny moments throughout. Logan never makes it to the party, but even he made me laugh when he got hungry while hunting someone and just ate the half of beef jerky he found in his pocket. With any other character it would seem sillly, but I actually believe that he might find beef jerky in his pocket
I'm not familiar with the artists other work, but it was good. I thought he did a much better job with the plainclothes characters than the costumed superheroes, who looked a little too posed.
It reminded me, in a way, of the "X-Men play baseball" issues we used to get from time to time. It's always nice to take that break from the action and see what heroes do on their down time. I wasn't sure what to make of a "point 1" issue and after reading it, I don't know why it wasn't just the next issue in the series, but all in all it was a nice diversion and sometimes I don't want anything more than that from my comics.
