As an example of how to set up a series, this debut issue of Who Is Jake Ellis proves just how to do it right. Nathan Edmondson has penned a wonderfully engaging tale, one that pushes the boundaries of the action-thriller genre and ties in a strange plot-point involving an invisible man who feels spooky, but manages not to ruin the serious, realistic tone of the piece. The art by Tonci Zonjic is done in an almost animated style that adds a level of depth and intrigue to the piece; the action scenes are competently executed, and the slower, character-based moments feel vibrant and alive. While the story hasn’t really got going, and there are more questions floating around in the ether than you would perhaps want from a first issue, this is an example of how to draw in readers and leave them questioning whether they have even the slightest grasp on what is going on.
