“What If” is a great concept, and while Marvel has been slowly killing it over the last few years with morphed tales of more recent stories, this 200th issue special finally manages to drag some enjoyment back into the series. The main feature here is certainly the weakest of all three within; “What If Norman Osborn had won the Siege” doesn’t sound like a story that really needs to be told within a year of the Siege event ending. It’s not bad, but it doesn’t quite live up to what an anniversary issue should be. The second feature, meanwhile, is written by Stan Lee and beautifully drawn by Dale Eaglesham and tells the story of “What If The Watcher Had Killed Galactus” – it’s a weird and wonderful, Silver Age-style book that plays of Lee’s strengths as a writer and feels like a light-hearted, entertaining throwback in comparison to the ultra-dark, violent tone of the Siege story. Last but not least there’s a reprint of Frank Miller’s classic “What If Elektra Had Lived” story which from what the issue’s extra material inferred, was voted the best What If story of all time by the staff at Marvel. It’s a lot of fun, and holds up considering its age. If you’ve ever wanted to check out What If, this is probably the place to start, there’s a lot of content here for the price, and even though part of it is reprinted material and the main feature itself is somewhat lacking, there’s still enough to enjoy.
