Wednesday Comics has been great so far but I still wish that the stories are just as exciting as the new format and concept. While the art have been really great, I feel that some of the strips are still playing it safe with generic stories
Short reviews for each "strip" (is "strip" the right term?)
1) Batman by Azzarello and Risso - I really hate this strip because it doesn't offer a new perspective on Batman. It's just like any other generic Batman story. Also, I'm really having problems with the way the strip jumps from one scene the previous issue (dating the widow) to another whole new different scene this issue (batcave). It's just a disjointed mess. The art's nice, though.
2) Kamandi by Gibbons and Sook - I was quite skeptical with the story at first because I thought it would be like Tom Hank's Castaway. But, I'm really glad that I'm wrong. With each issue, the narrative just keeps getting better and better. And, what I really love about the strip, is that even with the limitations of the format, it manages to create a wonderful narrative about the world and culture of Kamandi. Plus, it has talking tigers and gorillas. :D
3) Superman by Arcudi and Bermejo - I know it's just Superman being emo about being an alien. But, I really like how it offers a vulnerable perspective to the supposedly invincible Superhero. This issue gives us powerful flashback into Superman's origins. I liked it, despite the fact that I've seen it so many times.
4) Deadman - by Bullock and Heuck - In this issue, Deadman's stabbed. Not much progress for the story but the action scenes are just so vibrant. It's hard not to like it.
5) Green Lantern by Busiek and Quinones - This strip just makes me sad. On one hand, I like how it delves into Hal's pilot background. But, on the other hand, the story is starting to drag a little. It focuses too much on other characters that it's almost as if a title about the supporting characters of Green Lantern. For example, in this issue we are introduced to the competitive and somewhat shallow relationship of Hal and his frenemy, Dillon, which is basically similar to last issue.
6) Metamorpho by Gaiman and Allred - While not groundbreaking, I like how this strip reamins quirky and insane. In this issue, we see how exciting restaurants can be and finally, some action from Metamorpho and Element Girl. I really really like it!
7) Teen Titans by Berganza and Galloway - This issue gives us an introspective on that hateful medic. Sadly and ironically, we don't see much and learn much about the other Titans. I like how the art fits the tone of Teen Titans, but the story is just one of the worst in Wednesday Comics. Its line-up of Titans varies every issue and probably the only consistent chracters are Robin and Trident.
8) Strange Adventures by Paul Pope - We don't get a lot of action, but with this issue, Paul Pope's creates a fantastic environment out of the ever-boring desert. We also see Allana-Sardath talk about the different locales and her plans, that will probably affect the future of the narrative. Without Pope's art the whole story will probably be boring but the art manages to keep the story interesting. What I like about this strip, like Kamandi, is that really tries to develop the world of Adam Strange with exciting landscape and details that have the potential to create an icon of Strange.
9) Supergirl by Palmiotti and Conner - Still, one of the better strips in Wednesday Comics. I like how the strip's a testament to the potential of Supergirl as an exciting superhero. I also like how it uses the relationship of Supergirl with Streaky and Krypto reflects and develops Supergirl's personality rather than the other way around (*koff* Green Lantern *koff* Teen Titans) .
10) Metal Men by Didio and Garcia Lopez - This issue is probably weaker than the previous installments of Metal Men because it's just an intro to Bela and Magnus' relationship. It's also such a cliche' that the Bela (as the villain) was (probably) tricked into talking about himself instead of just going for his plan of killing everyone. If you also notice, last issue ended with a similar scene where Bela threatens everyone with his explosives.
11) Wonder Woman by Caldwell - I know that a lot of people hate how the panels are confusing. But, despite this, I think that WW is one of the better strips in Wednesday Comics because it has a perky and noob Wonder Woman (which i think is a new and refreshing take on the often serious Wonder Woman) paired with a wonderful and dynamic art. I also love how each installment, presents us with the different aspects of Wonder Woman's life (or future life as heroine?).
12) Sgt. Rock by Kubert and Kubert - Nice art and yet another torture scene and useless blabbering. Moving on...
13) Flash by Kerschl and Fletcher - Definitely one of the best strips in Wednesday Comics, if not the best! In this issue, we see that Flash's reality is starting to become a totally different one from Iris Allen's. Of course, the brilliant concept of using two strips that complement one another are used again to present the anomaly of Flash's different realities. I initially thought that the strip's format is just a gimmick but now, that we are given two different yet complementary realities, the format is starting to make sense and the format also gives the story a metafictinal approach and depth that goes beyond any of the other strips in wednesday comics.
14) The Demon and The Cat by Simonsona nd Steelfreeze - As much as I love how this strip started, I think the story's lost its charm. While the world of magic is interesting, I think that the strips drastic change in tone, sort made the strip lose its focus. I'm also a bit lost. I don't know half of the things the Demon's saying. Hopefully, events will be clarified next week.
15) Hawkman by Kyle Baker - I know this is blasphemy but despite having one of the grestest art out of all the strips, Hawkman is just a stupid action flick. I just don't care what the hell happens to Hawkman. I'll probably only start caring if:
a) he starts battling with a much bigger threat than stupid alien terrorists and plane crashes
b) he stops talking/ reporting about his every move (that we are actually seeing in the art/ illustrations)
c) if he dies
Maybe, I just had so much expectations for this, and so far, nothing has happened that important. Hopefully, next week, we get a little background on what makes Hawkman "Hawkman."
Overall:
a) Art in Wednesday Comics is just nearly flawless. If all comic books are illustrated like Wednesday Comics, I will probably will get them all.
b) Sadly, the stories for Batman, Teen Titans, Green Lantern, Sgt. Rock and Hawkman hasn't developed that much.
c) and there those, like Metal Men and The Demon and The Cat, that are just okay
d) but there are still some, that manage to create something interesting or new out of the DC characters (like Kamandi, Superman, Deadman, Metamorpho, Strange Adventures, Supergirl, Wonder Woman and finally Flash).
