First things first. This was a great concept, and the book I looked most forward to each week. I’ll miss it until next summer.

Secondly, some of the issues worked much better than others. Ideally, these strips should make the more obscure characters more attractive to us or provide a new insight about the familiar characters, while using some of the special opportunities of the large newsprint format.

So, here goes for reviews of each strip for its entirety.

Batman: 3/4. The art was gripping in the opener, then seemed to trail off just a bit. Nothing innovative here, but an average story overall.

Metamorpho: 5/5. The 5 for writing is for innovation and humor, as the story itself was almost nonexistent. The brilliant art is what kept the concepts plausible. Who would have expected a chutes and ladders story?

Demon/Catwoman: 3/3. I hated the depiction of Catwoman, but loved the Etrigan. The story got really predictable once Morganna showed up.

Deadman: 5/5. A star. It’s not easy to write in a mid-century pulp style, but this was perfect. I actually cared what happened. The art was trippy, and the colors were dead-on (pun intended).

Hawkman: 3/5. This is exactly what Hawkman should look like. The scenes in the air were great. The story was fine, until an adventure on Dinosaur Island took forever and a day.

Sgt. Rock: 2/3. A story that never seemed to emerge bogged this strip down. The drippy, pulpy, beat up face of Sgt. Rock was horribly disturbing (in a good way), but the rest of the art was average.

Metal Men: 4/4. I have never really understood the appeal of these goofy characters, but this story was pretty entertaining. I like the fact that the strip could easily have been drawn 40 years ago, but somehow did not seem dated.

Flash: 5/5. I have to admit that the story turned on itself enough times to make it incomprehensible, but the fact that the strip actually acknowledged that in its last issue made everything fine. It’s as though we are all in on the fact that Flash time travel stories never really quite make sense. Pulled off brilliantly with art that made one feel as though there were really multiple strips.

Supergirl: 5/5. The belle of the ball, and the surprise of the bunch. Who would have known that Supergirl and the Superpets could be so damn entertaining? This deserves a couple of re-reads.

Green Lantern: 2/2. A failed attempt to re-create the GL story from New Frontier. Boring. I love you Kurt, but this ain’t no Astro City.

Superman: 3/4. The aliens looked great, and the depictions of Metropolis and Smallville were great. Slightly above average story, although the best plot point was found in the background (involving a certain non-super, technology-equipped, tough guy who prefers to fight in the wee hours of the night).

Adam Strange: 4/4. The jaggies in the art and typography were really cool, but I’m not sure that I could read this whole thing in succession without a couple of breaks. I like the fact that the plot referred back to the duality of Strange.

Wonder Woman: incomplete/1. The art was so awful that it was impossible to follow the story. I gave up after the first few issues, but I know that there was something having to do with dreams.

Teen Titans: 1/2. I hated the look of this strip, but I hated the story even more. Did it occur to the writer that not everyone who reads this strip will have a good knowledge of Titans esoterica? It would be like an X-Men strip about the Shadow King or Mojoverse presented to the casual reader. Not fun.

After all is said and done, 5/5 for this innovative effort.

Story: 5 - Excellent
Art: 5 - Excellent
