It’s been a big few months for Millar. Movie based on his comic. Kick-Ass selling well. Wolverine and 1985 being great books. A hell of a cliff hanger on the last issue of Fantastic Four that has me eagerly anticipating the next issue. So when I heard about War Heroes, I was curious to see if his winning streak would hold up.

The answer: it’s hard to tell. This issue was mostly set up. Much more of a situation issue than a plot or character issue. And it was over very quickly, The only thing I got from this issue was that the concept is solid and the art is beautiful. The final splash page is one of the most dynamic portrayals of flight I’ve seen in a comic book.

This isn’t the most entertaining first issue I’ve read, but the series definitely shows promise. Maybe this will read better in trade, but I’ll keep picking it up in issues anyway.

Story: 2 - Average
Art: 5 - Excellent

  1. I flipped through this and thought about buying it, but Millar just hasn’t been doing it for me lately, and Harris’ art seemed not to his usual standards (remember, I flipped through).  Also, the book seemed really, really short.  Was it a standard 22 pager?

  2. Yep 22 pages plus the back pages.

  3. I thought this was pretty good, even though I wasn’t a fan of the art at all. Harris seemed to draw guys all at weird poses & faces that just look very unnatural, I think because he draws off photo references (?) sometimes the angles look wrong.

I think Millar is the best ideas guy in all of comics (not the best writer), he just comes up with the most wacky entertaining shit around.

  4. Yes, Harris definately has some issues with faces.

  5. Are you guys serious? The art was the main reason I bought this, I love Tony Harris’s stuff, faces and all.

  6. I love Harris and I love Millar, they’re both totally amazing. Millar as been entertaining me like crazy since a few months and I picked this up without hesitation. I haven’t read Ultimates, or Ultimates 2 yet – I know!shame on me! – and have picked up the total no-brainer of a story that is Ultimates 3 – just one issue to go, hope the ending is rewarding…hum – but if this book is good and that’s all that matters. It’s not Ultimates 3, and I’m good with that.

@WadeWilson : Man, yeah, Millar sure knows how to entertain the shit out of us. He’s been doing my favorite stuff this summer.
