I only got back into comics about 2 or 3 months ago, and already I’ve fallen totally in love with Mark Millar.  I didn’t hesitate to pick this up, even with the generic title and cover art.  My girlfriend flicked through the first couple of pages and said “erm, an army comic? Good luck with that.”  But I knew it had to be more to it, and this issue embodies everything I love about Millar.  A total mindfuck of a concept that bridges our comic book mentality with (a possible) reality.

This issue is a little light on the details, as most first issues are.  They do a great job summarising recent events and setting the landscape of the story right up front so we can get right to the meat of the series.  A few brief glimpses of characters that we’re sure to meet next issue but not much else except laying the concept of the series out for us.

The art didn’t grab me as much.  I’m not a fan of the “solid colours” colouring style but that’s just me.  I have to give props to the facial detail at least.  The faces are brilliant.  One main complaint: look for the little girl with the dog looking through the screen door near the end of the book.  That looks more like the face of an older teen than a little girl.  Make up and fake eyelashes and all.

I’m totally on board for this, I’m sure #2 will take us into the heat of battle, or possibly into some political discussion that I, for some insane reason, am really looking forward to.

Story: 5 - Excellent
Art: 3 - Good

  1. Side note: I only just noticed that one of the dudes on the cover has glowing hands.  Had I noticed that, maybe I wouldn’t think the cover art was ‘generic’.  Colour me embarassed.
