I wrote this review after reading the comments and other reviews about this comic. Apparently those other readers didn’t appreciate this books as much as I did. It is a good story, and I found the pacing, the art and the lettering all came together to create a well-crafted story. Rick Remender’s sense of timing and cinematic gore remains fun and flawless, Tony Moore’s art creates the right creepy feel, and the placement and design of the sound effects enhances the book to the point where it is a perfectly realized comic book reading experience.

Some reviewers wanted more resolution and/or more direct storytelling. This series, if it is anything like Remender and Moore’s work on Punisher, is sure to be about pacing and characterization, with an overarching story that will only become fully apparent sometime late in Act III. So far, if you’ve read both issues, you’re at minute 40 of a 2-hour movie. It’s only the end of Act I, folks. Set-up established. Now it gets darker and more complicated.

This book gets 5 out of 5 screaming giant albino bats of standalone-series eerie goodness. A post-modern take on a cool “character” bonded with an interesting personality, with great art and nice attention to detail by all involved.

Marvel just discontinued offering it as a subscription title, but I already had my subscription in. Flash is sure to meet Peter soon, as evidenced by the editorial responses in the letters column. Multi-issue crossover with ASM in our future?

5/5

Story: 5 - Excellent

Comments

  1. I didn’t love this comic, but I liked it.  How can Venom stand to fire a gun?  Wouldn’t loud gunshots hurt him?

  2. idk enough about the character, but apparently he can stand the gunfire, just not a cave full of giant screaming albimo bats. I assume the fact that the host was a soldier helps him overcome the symbiote’s aversion to loud noises? 😛
