Although I can't fault Vertigo for its marketing, I have to admit I avoided the sneak previews of this like crazy. When I'm looking forward to something, and being a huge Mike Carey fan who got back into comics thanks to my now-girlfriend recommending I read Lucifer, I don't want to be given just an out-of-context sample of the larger story to come. Also, I'm pretty much your prototypical anti-Harry Potter person (in fact, in a phone conversation last night, I mentioned that I thought JK Rowling must get paid by the adverb), so I didn't want the solicits and samples to speak for this work when the moment finally came to read. Now finished, I'm completely satisfied with my decision to come into this without any clues, as this story is much deeper and more nuanced than any mere taste could have imparted. Additionally, shades of allusion to other great comic and fiction works are sprinkled throughout, my favorite being the esoteric parallel drawn to the book "House of Leaves" whenever the main character's full name appears in blue text. The writing works on multiple levels, providing both big thrills and mystery, as well as very subtle mentions that you just know will come to fruition later in the story. Twice, through both dialogue and through the "news crawl" in one particular scene, we're told about a conflict in the Middle East. It's exactly the sort of thing that you know will become significant as the plot expands, and for now it gives the story a feeling that this tale is much bigger and more significant than the apparent focus on a few main characters. It just gives me the feel that this will blossom into a sweeping epic, and I couldn't be happier.

You write reviews I can respect.
What is the relation to Harry Potter?
Thank you. That’s a great compliment.
The story draws a strong parallel to Harry Potter, and in some cases was marketed on the basis of that corrolation.
