As a reader, I don’t like being talked down to. And being given too much background to a story feels like being talked down to. I love being thrown into the middle of a story, and being able to infer what’s going on by getting a little bit of background here and there. And I just didn’t get that here.
The first three pages felt like reading those dull little historical signs on a nautre trail. Yea, the info is important, but it’s not conveyed in an interesting way. And then it’s revealed that it’s a dream sequence, which is often the mark of a mediocre writer. In this case, it’s certainly a case of a boring dreamer.
So, now that the character is awake we get to watch her awkwardly stand in front of the mirror trying to figure out how to talk to a coworker she just slept with. And then they have awkward breakfast in a small town diner where everyone knows them! Haven’t I seen this movie?
And that was my main problem with this book. It reads like the melodramatic action/adventure movie that centers on an environmental issue and involves an incredibly trite romantic subplot.
Sounds like I hated it because it was awful, right? No. I think, if you’re in the mood for a goofy adventure story, this might be good. It’s silly while trying to take itself seriously, and sometimes that’s a great thing to go along for the ride with (I know a preposition isn’t the thing you’re not supposed to end a sentence with. Oh, well.). I wasn’t in the mood for it when I read it, but maybe I’ll come back and check it out later.
