This title has failed to capture the essence of the X-Men. It seems as though Fraction has no real direction with this title besides fulfilling editorial mandates such as moving the X-Men to SF, bringing back Magneto, and involving the team in Dark Reign.
This issue continues the Dark X-Men crossover. Nothing major seems to happen in this issue, it is merely a string of events that evoke little to no interest in the title's readers. The addition of Bolivar Trask to this storyline is utterly unnecessary. Though many may argue that this issue is still laying the groundwork and that the big payoff is about to come, I believe the mark of a talented writer is being able to lay the groundwork while still making it an entertaining read. So far, all Cyclops and the X-Men have done is talk and plan. And as for the Dark X-Men, there has been almost no development of their characters. I am really interested in what is going on in Emma's head.
Dodson's art is also woefully subpar. Though he is a master of the female form, he is only capable of drawing that one form. Too bad I only have Greg Land's art to look forward to.
I know Matt Fraction is a capable writer, as can be seen in his Casanova and Invincible Iron Man titles, yet his run on this title has not hit its stride. As a reader, I feel like Fraction is trying to hard to imitate Claremont/Byrne X-Men era, rather than making the characters his own. Similar to Bryan Singer and Superman Returns, it is this fondness for the past that is cheapening the title. Perhaps Fraction should take a step back and reevaluate what his goals are with his run. I mean his first arc was about Colossus getting a tattoo, his second arc revolved around the lackluster Sisterhood club and bringing back Psylocke, and now Dark Reign, making Emma a villain again. What made the Grant Morrison and Joss Whedon runs so great was that each writer did something original with the team, shook up the status quo, and was working towards something. This title, at the moment, is directionless.
On another note, what happened to Ed Brubaker? I thought he and Fraction were both going to write this title?!
