Thank you Terry Dodson. I know it's the hip new thing to hate Greg Land and so part of me wants to buck that trend and say something nice about his work... but honestly I've found his art is actually distracting from the story. The thing that's depressing is that he can draw. His early Cross Gen work while it contained some tracing actually flowed well and looked pretty good (or at least I thought so at the time). Anyways, as you can probably tell I was quite happy to have Dodson take over on art. The art, while not spectacular was solid and served the story well. I am a bit curious as to how Dodson will draw Pixie who I always thought was supposed to be like 13 until Land drew her and made her look around 18 or 19.
Moving to the story; I don't know who Dr. Nemesis is, but he is freaking awesome. I love the idea of Hank and Warren gathering a bunch of eccentric geniuses and forming a super science team. I share the opinion that the Scott/Emma relationship is more interesting than Scott and Jean ever were (in fact, Scott/Madelyne was more interesting as well) and it's only going to get better. Having Jean teach Scott the "psychic kung-fu" (very Fraction term) to build his own black box helps to add another nice wrinkle to the couple. I'd also like point out the they managed to go a whole issue with zero appearances of Wolverine. It's also nice that they're letting Kitty's "death" have a lasting impact.
I did have two minor complaints. First, while I love that Fraction is acknowledging the fact that these people have been all over the world and have embraced other peoples and cultures, if you are going to have them speak in a foreign language at least add some translated dialog boxes at the bottom of the page. Second, shouldn't the Alaska thing be kind of old news by now?
Nitpicking aside this is a good issue and it makes me excited for the next few years of Uncanny. It seems Fraction has brought a spark to Uncanny, giving it some energy that has been gone for a while and yet there are all kinds of great touches that hearken back to X-Men history that, as a long time reader and fan, pleases me greatly.
