By all rights, I should love this book. I live in San Francisco (which is SFO, btw, not SFX), and I was excited to read a super-hero book set in my city. I love big-ass X-Men teams; the bigger the better. I want my X-Men to make the Legion of Super-Heroes look tiny. I just finished the Captain America Omnibus, so I'm on a Brubaker high. I love the whole concept of the X-Men as part of a worldwide movement (a la Ellis's X-Force and Taskforce X, which he's bringing back in Astonishing as though every other X-Writer hasn't complete ignored it for the last ten years).
Somehow, Uncanny X-Men managed to hit every note badly. San Francisco is there, technically. You can tell, because there is a party at MOMA. Also, the words "Marin," "Golden Gate," "San" and "Francisco" appear. There are political protesters. And... nope. That's really it. None of the flavor of the city is captured. This isn't Robinson's Opal City, Guggenheim's Los Angeles or even whatever city the Great Lakes Avengers was set in. It's San Francisco in name only, and that's disappointing. Even the mayor bothers me. Flirting with Angel? Gah! Let's not even talk about how they "psychically blindfold" her when they take her to a public place.
Fight with Magneto? Boring retread.
"I stopped off at the Grand Canyon?" Lame.
Greg Land should be a career inker, because he's doing nothing but tracing, as it is.
In short, there is nothing good about this comic. You're better off giving your four dollars to a homeless person.

I think ‘SFX’ might have been a play on the acronym for ‘sound effects’ or ‘special effects’ and ‘San Francisco/X-men’.
I agree that the Magneto fight was lame. Not the most auspicious of beginnings, was it?
