I was late jumping aboard with “Uncanny X-Force”. While I like the general idea of X-Force, it wasn’t until I noticed the fantastic choices of team members that I knew I had to give it a try. After being thoroughly impressed with both hardcovers, the current “Dark Angel Saga” story arc is setting up to be the best yet.

Writer Rick Remender strongly builds upon the last issue and gives us some great moments. Throughout the series he has been subtly building relationships between the team members but not always positive ones. Each character has baggage which adds to the complexity of their relationships and we really see it in this issue. Remender almost perfectly combines story progression with a few time-outs for genuine, personal drama. I loved these scenes and they made the issue feel more alive as well as set the table for some potentially great character directions. The alternate dimension cast is solid and their villains are a hoot. It’s such a good read.

Mark Brooks is fantastic and I love his work on this issue. His amazing attention detail and picture-perfect character depictions give the book the look and tone it needs. While there’s not a single poorly drawn character, I particularly love his Fantomex. I would be amiss if I didn’t mention the great inks and colors. When all combined, this is a beautiful looking issue.

Needless to say I’m a big fan of this issue. From it’s story to it’s art, it’s high quality from start to finish. Remender’s writing is brilliant and Brooks is the perfect artist for this title. Can’t wait to see what’s next.
