I'd like to take a moment to compare this to Hickman's Avengers (spoiler alert), just because I can't help it having read the two in succession. Hickman's first few pages are simple: Omega Flight are trapped in enemy territory and the Avengers have to go rescue them. But he complicates the set-up until I don't care anymore, or fails to milk the dramatic potential of the rescue mission. Remender's first few pages were so complicated I wish I had a scorecard. I've never read a lot of the X-lore he's drawing this storyline from, so I was mighty lost. BUT Remender then takes most of the middle of the issue to give us understandable and intriguing character relationships, and then he gives me an ending that makes me care. I may not understand the wider context of this story, but I've got everything I need to enjoy it right here in 20 beautifully drawn pages.
