Lateness be damned!

This was one very enjoyable miniseries and everyone pretty much ignored it cause of how late this was. It is reasonable to skip this series in issues because a two year hiatus but now that its all collected in one marvelous trade. Why not go out and give this series a shot?

Now a lot of people will tell you that the fight advertised never happened. Which is not true, there is a Wolverine vs Hulk battle in here. It’s just that Lindeloff is not focusing on the fight. It’s like the ‘Ultimate Human’ story that came out a couple of years before. Sure it has a small tussle with Iron Man and Hulk (see a trend here?) but it’s a tiny fraction of what the true purpose of the mini is. This is pretty much a character study of two monsters, one who was able to control his rage (Hulk) and the other who is still a monster (Wolverine). Logan is jealous at Banner for able to control his rage and he takes the job of killing him just so he isn’t reminded of what a failure he is. There’s more to the mini then just that; a great new She Hulk is introduced and anytime Nick Fury is around it’s a badass moment. In fact there is a lot of interesting and bizarre moments that totally make this story unique. It balances out the action with a sorta ‘Lost’ type of plot points.

This was one of the earlier stories for Francis Yu, at least for the first two issues. So obviously he has updated his style and has worked for bigger things for Marvel. But believe me when I say that this might be Yu’s best work in a comic. Everything is just so stylized and beautiful to look at. Backgrounds are detailed and the flow of the characters movements seem real. What also helps to make this looks good is the coloring by Dave McCaig. Everything is just so bright and colorful to look at. It really stands out as one of the more good looking stories by Marvel. If anything else, it’s the artwork that’ll make you come back for more on this mini.

Okay, so this series was late. Shame on Lindeloff for just ignoring this story for so long and working on ‘Lost’. But can you blame him? ‘Lost’ turned into a cultural phenomenon and he had no time to work on this comic. Eventually he was able to come back and finish a very enjoyable comic. This is what I want out of the regular Marvel universe and not just the Ultimate line. Just an enjoyable experience and nothing is dark or gloomy about it. With Yu and McCaig’s artwork involved, it won’t be anywhere close to being gloomy. Just a fun time with a comic, that’s all this is.
