In a week where classic runs came to an end, I finally got my double-fix of "Invincible" and "Queen and Country" and I spent marginally more on comic books than I intended, I found myself drawn to "Ultimate Wolverine vs. Hulk #5." This, in itself, is quite strange as I really did love some of the other stuff out there this week, and yet, it was this comic that held me from page one.
Now, as everyone who's ever read this series will know, Damon Lindelof is the creator of "Lost," and therefore the book suffered from an almost two-year delay between issues 2 and 3. The first two issues were extremely good, but the wait soured me to the series, and when it was solicited for March, I scoffed. But it came out.
Issue 3, I discovered, was somewhat lacking in depth, but it was good enough, and issue 4 was very good, but now we come to issue 5, and I realised something that would normally have me clawing my eyes out in frustration and rage. We haven't seen more than 10 pages of fighting throughout these entire 5 issues. It's all been flashbacks leading up to the same moments, and then skipping over them.
This issue opens with Wolverine awakening in a bamboo thicket, naked, accompanied by a talking panda who claims to be his "spirit guide"; something which appears to be perfectly normal in Wolverine's eyes. Before too long it unravels that Wolverine has been in a coma since his fight with the Hulk (which we haven't seen yet) and we witness his interrogation by Nick Fury.
And here, we come across the part of this issue that had me jumping up and down with glee. Wolverine is just a head throughout his entire exchange with Fury. His body has been disconnected, and he is merely a head strapped into a machine that keeps him in place. And, as Fury attests, this proves that Wolverine can never die. Thereby, making him unstoppable.
Now I sound like I'm coming off hating this but, in actual fact, I think this is a brilliant move and goes beyond some of the things that have been put upon Wolverine throughout his tenure in the regular Marvel Universe. And, even when he's a head he remains, at his core, the Wolverine we all know and love; he's rude, nasty and threatening all at the same time.
The art by Lenil Francis Yu has been incredible throughout the entire series, and here it is no different. While it does appear rushed in places, as a whole, it was vibrant and powerful; far superior to his work on "Secret Invasion," which was, if I'm honest, hurt by the slow pace and general drag of that particular storyline.
I look forward to the next issue, which is out in just two weeks, and hope that the teaser on the final page is true. Because, if it is, we're finally going to get to see the fight the title is promoting.
