Now that is an Ultimate comic book.
In a time of Ultimatum and the severe over-inflation and general muck that has fallen over the Ultimate Universe since the end of Ultimate 2, it's soo great to see this kind of proof of concept again.
This issue is all about Ultimate Betty Ross and Ultimate Jen Walters and the manuevering that both make to reach their goals, ultimately leading to Ross hitting herself with a new version of the Hulk Serum to become Ultimate She-Hulk.
The writing and pacing (which is something most TV writters have a hard time with) is perfect. Lindelof manages to capture that spirit of the early Ultimate comics like soo few have been lately. Granted, there are a few heavy handed moments of pop culutre reference, but again, it matches the spirit of those old Mark Millar issues. I also can't help but wonder how much help he's getting from Ultimate X-Men vet BKV (who did the best run on these series) in getting the tone of the book down.
And then theres Lenil F. Yu. I know alot of people dog on Secret Invasion, but I honestly think it needed to happen (not something that can be said about Final Crisis) if only for two things: Dark Reign, and the leap foreward that Yu's made as an artist. Yu used to be an artist who, while his stuff looked great, wasnt always the best storyteller. Since SI, that seems to be a thing of the past. Even without inks, his art here is some of the best I've ever seen from him, and it makes me excited to see more from him in the future.
I know alot of people are of mind that, becuase of this book's lateness, they should skip it. Well, you are wrong. If your a fan of the old Ultimate Universe, the Hulk, Wolverine, the Ultimate 1 and 2, and Ultimate Nick Fury, you'll love this book. This book took me back to when I first started reading comics with the Ultimate X-Men, Ultimate Spider-Man, and Ultimate Marvel-Team Up.
I'm telling you folks, some comics arent worth the wait. This one totally was. This was the first comic I read this week that I wanted to have the next one in my hand NOW!
Art: 5 - Excellent
Lenil F. Yu is a great name. Should have been published in the "Like Stan something something" column several weeks ago.
Nice review! 🙂
thanks. i tried
I thoroughly agree with your Ultimate comments and channeling the spirit of Millar…
yea, too bad we probably wont see anything from him after this. makes me miss the days when Marvel was talking about Brian Singer writing the Ultimate X-Men (with BKV) and at one point David Mack was slated to write one too. sadly, that was not to be and we had to end that book as the mess it became.
