On the night that a new president or any world leader of free democracy is elected the people of that nation fall under a collective delusion and believe that this president or prime minister will truly change things, unlike the last…well unlike seemingly every leader since the the invention of democracy. The reality is that democratically elected governments are slow, and they are slow by design, built into their construction is a resistance to any drastic change, only incremental ones are achievable and that no matter how charming, how inspirational, or transformational a figure the newly elected leader appears to be, that they aren’t really as powerful as we would like to believe.

The Ultimates #16 is the dream of the newly elected leader that never comes to pass, the dream that some incredible (in this case superhuman) person through force of will will set fire to all the red tape that comes with democracy and just FIX SHIT. It’s an insanely fun and interesting power fantasy, and it’s something the ultimate universe should be replete with, given the lack of history and continuity that the regular 616 universe saddled with.

The art is kind of inconsistent but serviceable but the story is simply too much fun to pass up and in a weird way makes you examine your expectations of your own elected officials.

Story: 5 - Excellent
Art: 3 - Good
